Electric cars have some special indicator lights.

But many drivers do not know what the symbols actually mean.

When an indicator light comes on in the car, it rarely means anything good.

In most cases, these signal a problem with the car.

But by no means are all warning lights and their meanings known to motorists.

This also applies to some new symbols that can be seen on electric cars.

One of these new indicator lights shows a yellow glowing car with a large exclamation mark.

If you see this symbol, there is an electrical problem, such as problems with the battery, the cables or the drive of the electric car.

If the warning light is red, there is an acute danger.

Did you know that this warning light indicates an electrical problem?

Electric car: Glowing car symbol - what does that mean?

A representative survey by the British insurance provider

showed that many drivers still have some catching up to do when it comes to the warning signs of electric and hybrid cars.

2,200 participants from 27 EU countries were surveyed, who were asked multiple-choice questions about the different meanings of the symbols.

80 percent did not identify the electrical fault as such.

Also not well known is the AGC icon, which indicates that automatic glide control is activated.

77 percent of those questioned did not know what to do with it.

The same applies to an indicator light showing a green car with a double-headed arrow.

68 percent of those questioned did not know that the electric car is ready to drive when this sign is visible.

Electric car: Drivers are not familiar with many indicator lights

If you see a green car with the abbreviation EV, the hybrid car is driving in purely electric mode.

According to the study, 60 percent did not know.

The majority of respondents (59 percent) also did not know that an orange turtle in a circle means that the performance of the electric car is limited.

The situation is similar in an orange car with loudspeakers that informs about the activated external loudspeakers.

58 percent of the participants were not familiar with this sign.

Even with supposedly simple signs like a battery with a thermometer, many of the respondents had a hard time.

48 percent did not realize that this symbol indicates the temperature of the battery.

However, it was clear to most that a crossed-out E surrounded by an arrow means that the electric mode cannot be used.

Only 38 percent misinterpreted this symbol.

Taking the car regularly for maintenance reduces the risk of seeing one of the warning lights.
