The last traditional baker who was still producing locally in Weilheim has quietly closed its doors: Jürgen Grünwald has closed his shop of the same name.

Weilheim

– “Grüß Gott, our shop is closed”: Jürgen Grünwald left the end of his business on the answering machine quickly and painlessly.

It was a mixture of corona restrictions, blatant price increases and his own workload that prompted him to take this step.

"We've been running an emergency program for the past year and a half," says Grünwald, and since then the shop has been closed at 1 p.m.

Traditional baker in Weilheim closes: "Energy costs have exploded, flour prices have risen by 70 percent"

While there were ten employees around ten years ago, Jürgen Grünwald recently ran the shop together with his wife, an employee and a temporary worker.

He was alone in the bakery directly behind the shop on Murnauer Strasse from 2.30 a.m. – at some point that became too much for him.

By the way: everything from the region is also available in our regular Weilheim-Penzberg newsletter.

Another important reason was the financial aspect.

“Energy costs have exploded, flour prices have recently risen by 70 percent.

You can't pass that on to customers, otherwise nobody will come anymore," says Grünwald.

It's the end of a long tradition.

The Grünwald bakery existed at this location for almost 90 years.

Franziska and Josef Grünwald founded the business in 1933, and in 1966 they handed it over to their son Josef Grünwald and his wife Gerda, who still live in the house.

Finally, in 1996, Jürgen Grünwald and his wife Bettina took over the bakery.

Of course it was also difficult for the parents, "but there probably wouldn't have been any successors," says Jürgen Grünwald.

"Sooner or later it would have been over anyway."

Grünwald bakery closed: subsequent use still unclear

However, Grünwald will not give up the bakery trade entirely.

Because he continues to supply regular customers such as hospitals, schools and kindergartens with his proven products.

So in the future he will still be in the bakery from 2.30 a.m., but since there is no shop he can concentrate on that.

"Everything is becoming a little more relaxed." At this point, he would like to thank the employees, some of whom have been with him for many years, whom he hopes will quickly find a new job, as well as the customers who have remained loyal to the bakery for years.

"Unfortunately, there weren't enough of them in the end for it to continue to be profitable," says Grünwald.

What will happen to the empty store is still up in the air.

"I was already with a real estate agent, who gave me little hope," says the 54-year-old.

It is not the top location, and there are already some vacancies in the area.
