Authorities in New Zealand evacuated hundreds of homes today as a result of flooding caused by heavy rains during a storm that hit some parts of the South Island in the south of the island.
According to Agence France-Presse that the tropical storm of origin, which was accompanied by heavy rains, led to the flooding of rivers and the fall of trees, causing the closure of important road hubs.
Yesterday, the authorities declared a state of emergency in Buller on the West Coast and in the city of Nelson, where 233 homes were evacuated after a month's worth of rain fell in less than 15 hours.
Under the influence of these rains, the waters of the main Matai River in the city of Nelson overflowed, inundating homes and streets, and the city's mayor, Rachel Reese, described these floods as a once-in-a-hundred-year event.
