All her life, Serrana Auliso lived in the same small one-story house in the heart of the Punta Carretas neighborhood in Montevideo.
As far back as she can remember, this 93-year-old lady has always been able to see the same ramparts through her living room window.
“The building has remained the same, it is the neighbors who have changed”
, she laughs with laughing eyes.
For a long time, Serrana lived opposite the Punta Carretas prison, a high-security establishment where political prisoners of the Uruguayan dictatorship (1973-1985) were incarcerated.
When democracy returned, the penitentiary was closed to be converted into a shopping center which opened in 1994. The barges replaced the prisoners and the cells gave way to shops, to the delight of Serrana...
