Today, the American Center for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States announced that more than 13,500 cases of monkeypox have been recorded in the country.
The center explained in a statement that "this number of cases has been monitored in 49 US states since the emergence of the virus."
In early August, the US government declared monkeypox a “public health emergency” after a significant increase in the number of HIV infections.
As of August 5, the US health authorities had recorded about 6,600 cases of monkeypox.
The name monkeypox appeared for the first time in 1958 when two cases of smallpox-like disease occurred in colonies of monkeys kept for research in Denmark.
