A New Zealand family that purchased various items from a storage unit at an online auction, including used suitcases, discovered the bodies of two children in two of them, the Associated Press reported.
The children are 5-10 years old and died a few years ago.
The suitcases they were found in had been in the storage unit for about four years, according to the police.
Detective Topilao Valloa said the investigation is in its early stages.
"That includes establishing where, when and how they died," he told reporters in Oakland.

A South Oakland family reported to police Monday that they found human body parts in a suitcase purchased at auction.
The members of the family bought a full container of goods at a sale that was not checked before the purchase, and when they unpacked it in their house, parts of her body were found.
Neighbors told the police that the house gave off a terrible smell, which some identified as the smell of a corpse.
Valois emphasized that the family members have nothing to do with the bodies, but they are upset by the case.
The police determined at the beginning of the week that the family's home was a crime scene and opened an investigation, but refused to provide more details until today (Thursday).
According to Valois, the process of identifying the bodies is ongoing, but it is likely that they still have relatives in New Zealand.
He also said that the police have contacted Interpol and police agencies abroad - apparently due to the suspicion that the perpetrator or perpetrators of the crime reside outside the country.
"The investigative team is working very hard to find the perpetrator or perpetrators in these children themselves." How many years have you served in the police, and how many terrible cases have you seen, this is never an easy task.
I am a parent of young children as well, but I have work to do."
