Sky gazers in the northern United States may be treated to a rare spectacle Thursday and Friday night: the Northern Lights.

The phenomenon, known scientifically as aurora borealis, is known for lighting up the night sky with a dazzling light show of colors.

The Northern Lights, as the name suggests, typically occurs closer to the North Pole, near Canada and Alaska.

But a geomagnetic storm may push the aurora further south, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Light pollution, however, may make it difficult to see the phenomenon in busy cities.

AccuWeather recommends residents of Chicago, Boston, Seattle and Minneapolis travel to darker areas of their home states in order to catch a glimpse of the aurora.

The Northern Lights could potentially be visible in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Colorado, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island.

People in very northern parts of Pennsylvania, Nebraska, Illinois, Ohio, Indiana, California, Nevada, Utah and New Jersey might be able to see the aurora as well, according to AccuWeather.
