Opinion You have to choose: either a partner, or a unilateral move Israel today

Mahmoud Abbas is a pragmatic leader who understands that peace with Israel is the best option for the development of the State of Palestine • The intolerable things he says about the Holocaust should not prevent us from making an effort to sign a peace agreement with him

The things that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said in Berlin (of all places in the world) are chilling, and deserve all the condemnations he has received, and even more.

But the question is what is the conclusion of things in terms of Israel and its interest.

After all, those who oppose the division of the land and are ready to put up with one state west of Jordan, where the Jewish minority dominates the non-Jewish majority, cling to the words of Abu Mazen to explain that we have no one to talk to, and therefore we do not need to do anything, but leave to future generations an entity that is neither democratic nor Jewish girl.

Those who consider themselves Zionists cannot see this as an option.

If Yasser Arafat was not a suitable partner, and if Mahmoud Abbas is not a partner, there is only one conclusion: to lead a unilateral move.

The Arabs of the Land of Israel, even before they defined themselves as Palestinians, saw the Jewish immigration to the Land as a threat to their continued life here.

The Zionist movement, which was primarily a movement to save the Jews of Europe before the catastrophe, did not understand the Palestinian concern and had difficulty understanding why it was not welcomed in the land of its ancestors.

The Palestinians, who saw how their lands were being purchased, evicted from them and trying to base the work there on "Hebrew work", saw what we saw as expropriation pioneers, and made a great effort to prevent the Jews from coming in droves and settling here.

The Holocaust of European Jews gave Zionism a moment of compassion for the terrible thing that happened to the Jews, and support for the partition plan in 1947.

The monstrous dimensions of the Holocaust did not leave the world, which stood on the other side, the necessity to recognize the Jewish state, and alongside it - an Arab state.

The Arabs began a failed effort to present the Holocaust as another pogrom that many were like.

The smaller the Holocaust appears - so they thought - the legitimacy for the existence of the State of Israel will decrease, and perhaps even disappear.

Most of the leaders of the Arab world tended to dwarf the dimensions of the Holocaust.

Many of them - from Hajj Amin al-Husseini to Anwar Sadat - were sympathizers of Nazism or even its allies.

Israel, which made the historic reparations agreement with Germany exactly 70 years ago, could not afford to boycott world leaders who leaned towards Nazism, and remained in their positions.

In the terrible debate between Ben-Gurion and Begin about accepting the reparations, the pragmatic side prevailed, because Israel's security and prosperity were the first priority, with all the pain.

When Begin did the most important political act in Israel's history after its establishment, and supported Sadat with Israel's withdrawal from an area three times larger than its sovereign territory, he did not ask him to renounce his admiration for Hitler.

Opponents of giving up Sinai criticized Begin for this.

He was wise enough to favor signing a peace treaty with Israel's greatest enemy.

Mahmoud Abbas is a pragmatic leader who understands that peace with Israel is a vital interest for the success of the Palestinian national enterprise, and that living alongside Israel is the best option for the development of the Palestinian state.

The intolerable things he says about the Holocaust (even if he repeats his words that it was the greatest crime in modern times) should not prevent us from making an effort to sign a peace agreement with him.

Those who believe in the possibility of reaching such an agreement will not wait for a more moderate Palestinian leader.

But whoever doesn't want to talk about Israel as a democratic and liberal Jewish state, and doesn't want to talk to the leader in Ramallah - must stand up, lead a unilateral move, at all its risks, and establish a border that will remain in place until peace is negotiated. Surrender to those who prefer a complete Land of Israel on The face of the State of Israel is the real danger to our future in this country.
