According to the Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR), apple trees in particular can benefit from pruning in summer;

provided this is reserved and only affects the young shoots.

However, you should be careful with the following trees if you have planned a pruning in August:

  • plum

  • plum

  • Cowardly

For plums and damsons, pruning in August causes growth to slow down - an effect you don't want during harvest time.

Pruning should not be carried out on figs in summer or autumn.

You should postpone this until after the hibernation, when the fig has no leaves yet.

As soon as the fig tree sprouts again, the cuts close.

A light maintenance cut, on the other hand, can be carried out on all trees at any time.

It simply removes dead or crooked branches.

You should also proceed cautiously with the perennials: While a pruning in autumn can make sense so that the perennials gather strength for the new year, you should be especially careful with the golden strawberry (Waldsteinia), the candytuft (Iberis) and some cranesbill species only use scissors if they grow too much.

For example, if you cut the Bergenia in August, you will miss the reddish coloring of the leaves, as

reports.

Summer is usually a good time for the first pruning of plants because the young trees then heal better.

In addition, severe pruning of the hedge is prohibited between March and September, as animals could nest there.

But perennials can also be affected, which is why you should also observe the closed season for older shrubs, as birds like to breed in dense and older shrubs.
