The Russian Foreign Ministry clarified on Thursday that the Russian Federation has no intention of using nuclear weapons in various combat arenas and has no desire for a direct confrontation with the West.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Ivan Nachayev said in a press briefing that Russia reserves the right to use nuclear weapons "in emergency situations" in response to an existential threat, but did not explain what this definition means.
"The Russian military doctrine allows a nuclear response only in response to a threat of mass destruction or when there is a real fear for the existence of the country itself," the spokesman said, adding: "In other words, the use of the nuclear arsenal is only possible as part of self-defense following an attack on us and only in emergency situations."
Earlier this week, the Russian Defense Minister said that in the current campaign in Ukraine, Russia has "no need" for nuclear weapons.
