Météo-France was surprised by the very violent storms which fell Thursday morning, between 8:15 and 9:15 am, on the west of Corsica and which caused very strong gusts, greater than 200 km / h.
The Marignana station measured an exceptional gust at
224 km / h.
A record.
And in Calvi the wind blew at 197 km/h (against 158 km/h on December 28, 1999).
“But from 10 am, the winds weakened”
, specifies Christophe Morel, forecaster with Météo-France.
The forecasting model had not clearly predicted such a violent situation.
“Thunderstorms are very complex phenomena to predict with structures on very small scales, depending on elements at altitude, currents of violent winds at altitude and wind shears towards the ground. Sometimes, our Arome forecasting model cannot decide between the different possible scenarios”
, explains François Gourand, forecasting engineer at Météo-France.
