As-Suwayda-Sana
The Directorate of Agriculture in As-Suwayda announced the end of the chickpea harvest operations for the current season, within an area of 16,338 hectares.
The Assistant Director of Agriculture, Eng. Alaa Shehayeb, said in a statement to SANA reporter today that the harvested areas constitute 85 percent of the total cultivated areas for the current season, which amount to 19,230 hectares, because some of the areas were left out of harvest as a result of weather conditions that are not suitable for the growth of the crop, which affected productivity.
He added that the harvesting operations were carried out manually and their dates differed from one region to another according to the dates of their cultivation, and were delayed in some locations due to the lack of manpower in this field.
Engineer Shehayeb pointed out that the chickpea crop is one of the main crops in As-Suwayda Governorate, and most of its cultivated varieties are spring and are implemented in rain-fed depending on rainwater.
The Directorate of Agriculture in As-Suwayda had initially estimated the production of 1,356 tons of chickpea crop in As-Suwayda for the current season.
