1. Senegal-Mauritania: a dam in the Sahel
In the wake of the conflict between the two countries in the 1990s, it is to be feared that the operation of the Diama dam on the Senegal River will contribute to fueling tensions by upsetting the precarious balance between herders and farmers.
The dam is managed by the Organization for the Development of the Senegal River (OMVS), which has four member states: Senegal, Mauritania, Mali and Guinea.
It fills Lake Guiers (Senegal), Lake R'kiz and the Aftout-es-Sahel depression (Mauritania), and works "in tandem" with the Manantali hydroelectric dam in Mali.
