2022-08-19T17:18:05.851Z

The artist Marin Montagut has rented a small house with all-white walls in a Parisian cul-de-sac. By partnering with Farrow & Ball, he brought it a dose of color. His talent and his taste for second-hand objects did the rest. His pavilion has become a country house. Deco lesson.

It's hard to resist the world of artist and designer Marin Montagut.

This lover of Paris became known with his letter "Bonjour Paris" where he delivered, with his charming line and in a treasure map spirit, his secret addresses in the capital.

Immediate success.

He will then decline his idea in several cities around the world.

He will also sign, in 2018,

Under the roofs of Paris

, a decoration book co-written with Ines de la Fressange.

Artist and designer Marin Montagut loves color and shows it.

Romain Ricard

The starting point

"I discovered this little house located on the edge of the 11th and 12th arrondissements of Paris while scouting for my book

Le Paris extraordinaire by Marin Montagut.

(Editions Flammarion).

I was looking for secret places and I stumbled upon a private passage with a vine over fifty years old that I immediately fell in love with.

I asked the owner if there wasn't something to rent there… And, luckily, there was this little house!

I left my apartment in 15 days to settle in and start all over again!

She was flawless.

At first, I just put my furniture... But very quickly, I realized that its all-white side didn't suit me.

I love the color.

So I embarked on a painting and decoration project in partnership with the Farrow & Ball brand to give it a more joyful and country style.”

After: a shades of green, a collection of reliquaries and ex-votos as well as logs give the staircase a real personality.

Romain Ricard

“The stairway was all clean, all white.

I could have left it that way, but I wanted to give it a more country look and make it a space for displaying my ex-votos and my reliquaries.

So I painted it green.

The upper part is more linden, a shade that highlights my collections well, and the lower part, in a more artichoke version.

As there is a fireplace in the house, I ordered one and a half cubic meters of wood.

The supplier threw it on the sidewalk and it took three hours to bring it into the house.

When I ordered I did not realize at all the volume that it represented.

I hadn't planned a storage place.

So we put the logs under the stairs where there was room.

Etc'

is perfect !

Very decorative!”

The kitchen

After: repainted cupboards, a scratched wall, a bar, antique lights and a door... That changes everything!

Romain Ricard

“The kitchen was also white.

I painted the cupboards green, again to cultivate this nature and countryside spirit.

But I also splurged!

I got rid of my dresser that occupied the far wall and painted yellow and white stripes instead.

It looks like wallpaper, but it's really homemade!

I spent an entire day applying large strips of tape to the wall.

They had to be perfectly straight and harmoniously distributed.

Then I applied Farrow & Ball yellow paint between these bands.

Once it was dry, I removed the adhesive.

And I got perfect stripes.

When people understand that it's "

home made

» they are subjugated!

In front of this striped wall, I installed a white bust.

I find that this environment highlights my large old farmhouse table, 2.50 m long, which I have surrounded by mismatched chairs.

This table is not just for eating.

I like to stage all sorts of objects, especially candlesticks.

To create a punctuation in this large space that is the kitchen, I found a real bar in Normandy.

It took me a long time to find it but this one is perfect with its zinc.

To complete this spirit, I added small vintage rosin glass pendant lights.

Another detail: the front door.

When I move into a place, if the doors are contemporary, I replace them with old doors!

That's what I did, here in the

entrance: I installed an 18th century glass door that brings light and accentuates this country side that I like so much!

Finally, a little touch of comfort with an uncovered armchair.

An upholsterer would be horrified to see the hessian of a seat exposed in this way, but I like this unexpected raw side.

After: a lounge area facing the fireplace where life is good thanks to a mix of styles: a 50s lamp, an 18th century screen, an AM.PM bench bought ten years ago, a kilim.

Romain Ricard

“The fireplace in the living room was superb.

I didn't touch her.

However, I wanted to highlight it by playing with the surfaces that surround it.

To make her even more eye-catching, I wallpapered her wall with striped Farrow & Ball wallpaper.

It is also a nod to the painted kitchen wall.

There, the stripes are wider.

I imagined above a cabinet of curiosities by hanging showcases with butterflies.

In front of the fireplace, I put a kilim and I always leave a huge colorful crocheted blanket on the chaise longue.

I love having blankets handy especially for the winter.

This accentuates this “fireside” side.

I also like to play with coffee tables.

There, I associated models of different shapes and materials like a puzzle.

L'

one is on wheels which allows it to be moved, to change the decor a little depending on the moment.

The bench seat is the only contemporary piece in the living room!

I bought it from AM.PM ten years ago.

I spotted it at someone's house and found it very well made, in a kind of black linen.

Don't look for it, AM.PM has stopped selling it!

I associated it with a table from the 1950s found at the Puces de Saint-Ouen.

My screen from the 18th century, produced in Uzès, absolutely extraordinary, has found its place there: clearly visible, it also makes it possible to break up the space of this living room which is a little too large, to attenuate its very square side and to conceal the radiator not very pretty !

In short, it brings a very cozy touch.

Other details: the buffet found in Normandy, which I

After: Farrow & Ball floral wallpaper, an old Provençal boutis on the bed and seagrass on the floor, were enough to give an ordinary bedroom the air of a bedroom in a country family home.

Romain Ricard

“The window overlooking the vineyard made me want to make this room a cocoon in the spirit of an old family home.

So I opted for floral wallpaper, still by Farrow & Ball.

I also played to the maximum on the accumulation of flowers with an old Provençal boutis – I collect them – thrown on the bed.

We find the same vintage rosin glass fixtures as in the kitchen.

When I wake up, I have the impression of being far from Paris!”

The workshop

After: an inspiring workshop with marvelous walls, a theatrical pink armchair, multiple fetish objects including an owl-shaped lamp, work companion.

Romain Ricard

“To work, I need to be surrounded by inspiring objects.

In my workshop, there are therefore everywhere.

I created “wonderful walls” there by hanging all sorts of elements with, in the background, a Farrow & Ball wallpaper.

As for the top of the fireplace, there is a cabinet of curiosities spirit.

Among the objects that I adore there is my owl lamp so kitsch and on which I added a marbled paper lampshade – we sell them in my shop – which is like a little hat.

I fell in love with her at a flea market.

She keeps me company.

I also installed a pink armchair, very rococo.

It was a hairdresser's chair for applying makeup.

It adds a great theatrical touch!
