Angelina Jolie claimed that Brad Pitt

accused her of "ruining this family"

during a heated -- and at times physical -- confrontation aboard their private jet in 2016, according to an FBI report on the incident originally shared with both sides in 2017. The report, which has not been made public, was obtained by NBC News on Tuesday.

A recently sealed Freedom of Information Act lawsuit filed against the FBI named a Jane Doe (a shorthand for someone who wishes to remain anonymous) as the requestor for the release of the FBI documents.

Details of what is being sought in the most recent filing are unclear, and a lawyer for Jane Doe said in April that he could not comment on the identity of his client.

However, the lawyer pointed out that this person

"has been looking for these records for years, but obstacles have been placed on her and she has had to resort to the judicial process to receive them."

The original file, seen by NBC News in March, described the plaintiff as female and recounted that "her then-husband and their children, all of whom were minors at the time, were traveling on a private plane," when the "husband allegedly physically and verbally assaulted the plaintiff and the children, who have 'experienced lasting physical and mental trauma as a result of the assault.'"

The summary of facts contained in the Freedom of Information/Privacy Act (FOIPA) filing is similar to what is detailed in the FBI report.

Jolie's reps did not respond to requests for comment and Pitt's reps declined to discuss the case.

The FBI did not comment either.

However, sources familiar with the legal battle between both parties have questioned Jolie for trying to make this document public through the FOIPA.

“This report was delivered to both parties, almost six years ago.

We both had it, in full,"

the sources told NBC News.

“The final paragraph (...) is very clear and concise about the fact that all parties, all law enforcement agencies agreed on the decision not to press charges.

This wasn't like a close call.

They did their research like they're supposed to.

And the decision was made with all parties in agreement.”

In November 2016, the FBI and the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) closed an investigation into allegations of physical abuse involving Pitt and his children stemming from an incident in September 2016 aboard a private plane in which Pitt, Jolie and their children were traveling.

A source close to Pitt at the time said: "He is emphatic that he did not rise to the level of physical abuse, that no one was physically affected.

He didn't hit his son in the face in any way.

He did not do it;

he is emphatic about it.

He got his hands on her, yes, because the confrontation was getting out of control.”

No criminal charges were ever filed against Pitt.

Jolie filed for divorce from the actor in September 2016, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split.

The artist also accused Pitt in 2018 of not paying "significant" alimony for more than a year.

Despite

being declared legally single in April 2018, custody issues have continued.

The breakup of the couple – known in its day by fans as

Brangelina

– was very public.

The FBI report shows Jolie's view of what she described as a stressful, hours-long flight in which she said Pitt had been drinking.

In a 2017 GQ magazine article, Pitt claimed that he had struggled with alcohol and had quit drinking.

According to the FBI report, Jolie accused Pitt of pouring beer on her during that September 2016 trip that ended at Los Angeles International Airport.

Pitt appeared to take issue with raising his then-wife during the plane ride at the end of a two-week family trip, according to the report, which did not list the city of origin.

Jolie and her six children were on the flight, and the

Tomb Raider

actress claimed she "could tell (classified) was angry," in an apparent reference to Pitt, according to the report.

Jolie claimed that when she asked him what was wrong, he allegedly replied, "That kid looks like a f------ kid from Columbine."

"She recalled that (Confidential) went on and stated things like, 'You don't know what you're doing,'" in apparent reference to her motherhood, the report continued.
