Heavy thunderstorms in the Munich region: hail, heavy rain and gusts of wind with up to 85 km/h possible

Update from August 18, 7:23 p.m .:

Heavy thunderstorms are coming from the south.

In the Munich region, there can be heavy rain with precipitation of up to 40 liters per square meter and gusts of wind with speeds of up to 85 kilometers per hour.

Katwarn and the German Weather Service (DWD) report this on Thursday evening.

Hail with grain sizes of up to two centimeters is also possible.

In view of the approaching storm, Katwarn warns that flooding of basements and streets is possible, and landslides can also occur.

Trees could be uprooted or roofs damaged, so people in Germany should close doors and windows as much as possible and secure outdoor objects.

In addition, you should not stay outside if possible and if you do, keep your distance from buildings, trees and high-voltage lines.

DWD and Katwarn predict continuous rain and flooding

Update from August 18, 5:46 p.m

.: After the first thunderstorms on Thursday, there could be prolonged precipitation on Friday in the south of Bavaria and in the Upper Palatinate, and there could also be heavy rain in some areas near the Alps.

This was announced by the German Weather Service (DWD) on Thursday.

The Katwarn warning system has also issued a warning of "continuous heavy rain" for the region around the state capital.

According to DWD and Katwarn, between 50 and 80 liters per square meter can fall here.

On Saturday, showers and thunderstorms are expected from the northwest, especially in the afternoon.

Weather experts are warning of flooding in numerous districts in southern Bavaria in view of the high levels of precipitation expected on Friday and Saturday.

Rivers such as the Loisach, Ammer and Isar could sometimes reach flood notification level 1, as reported by the responsible water management authorities.

That could mean "smaller proliferations in places," it said.

Notification level 2 is also possible on the Isar in the Munich area, so agricultural and forestry areas could be flooded - there could also be slight traffic obstructions on main roads and municipal roads.

Heat wave ends in Bavaria: risk of thunderstorms high on Thursday

First report:

Munich – Heat, dryness, drought: Germany is suffering from dry weather that has been going on for months.

In Bavaria, nature in the north in particular fights for every drop of water.

The current heat wave will end on Thursday, rain is in sight.

However, the amounts of precipitation do not seem to be sufficient to counteract the drought.

The German Weather Service (DWD) expects the first thunderstorms in Bavaria on Thursday.

From late morning, "rain interspersed with local thunderstorms" is likely in the Alps.

In the other regions there will be isolated thunderstorms with heavy rain.

In the evening the risk of thunderstorms increases enormously.

In the Alps, "local exceeding of the storm thresholds of 25 l/sqm in a short time cannot be ruled out", there could also be hail and gusts of wind.

"In the afternoon between the eastern edge of the Alps and the Bavarian Forest, heavy gusts of wind around 90 km/h cannot be completely ruled out."

"Drought drama" continues: New heat wave coming next week

"It's really intense," meteorologist Dominik Jung from

wetter.net

is shocked.

The heavy rain that was also announced for West Germany simply disappeared from the weather models.

Only in Bavaria is there still a lot going down, where heavy rain can lead to flooding or even flash floods.

The rain is not enough for the end of the drought here either, the "drought drama" continues.

"The ground is so dry and hard that it can hardly absorb any water and after that it's often dry, sunny and very warm again from the weekend," said Jung.

The Germans are literally caught in permanent heat mode.

In the next week, the highs will rise again to 30 degrees and above, at the top to 35 or 36 degrees.
