With its four dish-shaped radars nine meters in diameter aligned on the deck, the
Yuan Wang 5
looks like a machine straight out of Star Wars.
Officially, the 222 meter long vessel, almost as large as the Charles de Gaulle, is a scientific vessel.
The Chinese press has been hammering for years that the Yuan Wang 5 is dedicated to “
space tracking
” and “
research
” missions.
Since its commissioning in 2007, it has sailed in the Pacific to participate in the launches of Beidou navigation and telecommunications satellites, the monitoring of a Martian probe and a Long March rocket... It made a stopover in French Polynesia and in New Zealand.
When the
Yuan Wang 5
dropped anchor in the Sri Lankan port of Hambantota on August 16, the spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs assured that "
its activities do not affect the security of countries in the region
".
The ship will go back to sea on Monday.
