José Adán Aguerri Chamorro, opposition leader and former president of the Superior Council of Private Enterprise (COSEP), was sent this Thursday by the judicial authorities to serve his sentence at home, according to what his relatives reported to the Nicaraguan Center of Human Rights (Cenidh).

The police arrested Aguerri on June 8, 2021. On February 24 of this year he was found guilty of the crime of conspiracy to undermine national integrity and on March 4 he received a sentence of 13 years in prison.

"Family sources confirm that José Adán Aguerri, a political prisoner, has been transferred to his home. This decision by the regime occurs after numerous alerts about the deterioration of his health. We demand freedom for political prisoners or a change in the preventive detention regime. ", expressed the Cenidh through its Twitter account.

For its part, the Civic Alliance for Justice and Democracy published on its Twitter account: "Today, August 18, the court serving the dictatorship sent our member Jose Adán Aguerri under house arrest. José Adán is innocent! He has committed no crime!"

So far, neither the Judiciary nor the Prosecutor's Office have updated the information on the case or published any official statement explaining the reasons and circumstances of the new measure.

CNN is trying to obtain an official version, as well as comments from Aguerri's relatives and his lawyer.

The Civic Alliance for Justice and Democracy reported on March 19 that Aguerri was suffering from a deterioration in his health, caused by the lack of sun, as well as skin and vision problems.

"She weighs about 135 pounds, has a fungus on her back and chest, partial loss of vision in her left eye, otitis and migraine. She urgently needs specialized medical attention," the Civic Alliance demanded at the time.
