During the first major public meeting of his campaign on Thursday evening, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva unleashed the heavy artillery against his main rival, outgoing President Jair Bolsonaro.

Pacing a large stage, the left-wing ex-president regained his former ardor to harangue a crowd of supporters gathered in a large square in Belo Horizonte, capital of the key state of Minas Gerais, for the presidential election of 2 October of which he is the favourite.

The 76-year-old former trade unionist launched his seventh candidacy for the presidency of Brazil this week, which he led twice (2003-2010).

But for him, this year, it is not a "normal" campaign where ideas clash.

“What is at stake today is democracy against fascism, democracy or barbarism

,” he said in an even more hoarse voice than before.
