Tutzing - The Tutzing Brahms Days are celebrating a double anniversary this year.

The jewel among the German classical music festivals will be held for the 25th time in autumn with the cooperation partners KunstRäume am See by Elisabeth Carr and Manfred Frei from loft music.

At the same time, Johannes Brahms died 125 years ago.

The music festival is organized by the Friends of the Tutzinger Brahmstage.

In an interview, its chairman Andreas Dessauer explains the anniversary program and the challenges that the pandemic has brought with it.

He also pays tribute to the founder of the Tutzinger Brahmstage, Christian Lange, who died unexpectedly.

Mr. Dessauer, the Tutzinger Brahmstage will be held from October 3rd to 30th this year.

What can classic fans expect for the anniversary?

Andreas Dessauer:

The anniversary music festival will be shaped by two composers, Brahms and Dvořák, who supported each other across borders at the time to create something new, for example to write great symphonies.

For this reason, the festival will open on October 3 with a reading of correspondence between the artists, accompanied by a piano duo, and on the following four October Sundays, all four Brahms symphonies, each supplemented by a Dvořák symphony , listed.

The Munich Symphony Orchestra was won over for the concerts, conducted by the Mexican conductor Alondra de la Parra.

What distinguishes this orchestra, but also this conductor?

Andreas Dessauer:

The Munich Symphony Orchestra is one of the major, internationally renowned orchestras.

They enthusiastically accepted the artistic challenge of performing eight extraordinary symphonies, four by Brahms and symphonies 6 to 9 by Dvořák, in a relatively small space, the Catholic Church of St. Joseph in Tutzing.

It will be a musical treat for the listeners.

The conductor, Alondra de la Parra, is one of the few who have managed to make an international name for themselves.

We look forward to witnessing how she will implement this program, which is unique in this form, in the special concert room.

The spiritual father and founder of the Tutzinger Brahmstage is Christian Lange, who has now passed away unexpectedly.

What was his special merit?

Andrew Dessauer:

The news of the death of our friend Christian Lange affected us greatly and filled us with sadness.

In 1997, in the 100th year of Johannes Brahms' death, Christian Lange founded the Tutzinger Brahmstage with other music enthusiasts, such as the then church musician of St. Joseph, Franz Reißner.

Since then, artists who are in demand from all over the world, as well as young up-and-coming talents, have been coming to the fine festival every year.

Christian Lange was able to win over the well-known Henschel Quartet, the prominent bass-baritone Franz Hawlata, the baritone Christian Gerhaher and the young tenor Jonas Kaufmann for a number of performances.

With his spectacular program idea of expanding the already very diverse musical genres of the past concert series with the performance of the four Brahms symphonies,

he posthumously sets a wonderful climax at the end of his era.

It will be a matter close to our hearts to have this 25th Tutzinger Brahmtage carried out in his spirit and in special appreciation of his commitment as musical director of this festival.

As for many other festivals, artists and organizers, the Tutzinger Brahmstage Pandemic was not exactly easy years ago.

How was the festival able to hold its ground in these difficult times?

Andrew Dessauer:

With the Tutzinger Brahms Days in October 2020 and 2021 we can look back on many very positive experiences.

The best thing was – they could take place.

An extraordinary commitment of the organizer and the organizers made this possible.

To name just two examples: In 2020, the demand for the concerts was greater than visitors were allowed into the concert rooms - the artists played twice without further ado and admirably.

In 2021, one quartet was canceled at very short notice due to illness - and another traveled from far away for this one concert evening and returned on the same day to take our concert-goers with them into their world of sound.

We are also very grateful that we were fortunate to find supporters and sponsors and of course our club members supported us,

Behind the Brahms Days is a circle of friends with nothing but honorary comrades-in-arms.

How has this developed in recent years?

What are the next plans?

Andreas Dessauer:

Especially in the past two years, which brought with it a high risk for cultural organizers due to the pandemic, the team of board members and organizers had to continue to look ahead and still act more flexibly.

In order to minimize the financial risk, many activities, such as creating flyers, posters and programs, were taken on by board members.

Now the 25th "Tutzinger Brahmstage" will take place without the longstanding artistic director Christian Lange, but we will try to continue his great legacy in gratitude and recognition.
