Aschheimer Tobias Potye won the silver medal in the high jump at the European Athletics Championships and is now dreaming of Olympic gold at the 2024 Games in Paris.

Aschheim

– A larger delegation from Aschheim was stationed in the south curve of the Munich Olympic Stadium, where FC Bayern football fans used to sing their hymns until 2006.

With the best view of the track and field star who grew up in her club, FC Aschheim: Tobias Potye.

In the hustle and bustle of the European Championships, the 27-year-old had a difficult time on this legendary Thursday evening when it came to the unrestricted attention of the audience.

On an evening when Malaika Mihambo wanted to win gold in the long jump and Konstanze Klosterhalfen actually did over 5000 meters, the high jumper from Aschheim was not so much in the foreground - except in his fan curve.

But then: Before Klosterhalfen ran and Mihambo jumped, it was already very loud in the south curve of the Olympic Stadium.

Tobias Potye, local hero and cheered on by "everyone who could make it here", flew over 2.18, 2.23 and 2.27 m in the first attempt. In the end, that was enough for silver behind Olympic champion Gianmarco Tamberi from Italy (2.30).

Nine years ago European champion at U20

Potye (27) was once a U20 European champion, but that was nine years ago.

Since?

For a long time it didn't go really high, strictly speaking never higher than 2.27, which he crossed for the first time in 2018.

That may also be due to Potye's body: it's just not made for competitive sports, "it doesn't like it that much," he said with a smile in the belly of the Olympic Stadium when he reported on his tendon problems.

In fact, Potye even wanted more than silver, after all he is German indoor champion - and together with the dethroned defending champion Mateusz Przybylko (6th / 2.23) German champion, height a few weeks ago in Berlin: 2.30.

So far, nothing more has been possible: "I haven't done a technical unit in the past two years, so it's obviously difficult to hit every jump."

No technical training because of knee problems

This year, Potye, a computer science student but currently a high jump professional as a member of the Bundeswehr Sports Promotion Group, “only trained his knee” – he jumped “only in competitions”.

"The medal," he said, "was definitely the goal, despite the significant limitations, so I can't complain."

But it also means that the Aschheimer wanted more.

"I've jumped against Gianmarco a couple of times," Potye said, "and actually it was time to beat him.

Now I have to postpone it again – but it will come.” He definitely wants to continue until 2024, until the Olympics in Paris.
