It seems as if everyone now wants to stock up on heating oil.

Supplier Richard Kinshofer from Poing reports on "panic buying" and delivery bottlenecks.

Poing - Corona pandemic, Ukraine war and the upcoming winter: Richard Kinshofer from Poing has been registering a high demand for heating oil for weeks.

He would be happy to satisfy them, only: "Some warehouses are empty or closed." Medium-sized heating oil companies like the family business in Poing get the oil from large tank farms, Kinshofer usually in nearby Feldkirchen (Munich district).

But this is currently closed, he reports, for maintenance and because there are no goods.

This could be related to a refinery accident in Schwechat (Austria), suspects the Federal Association of Medium-sized Oil Companies.

Poing: Waiting times even for suppliers

“Some traders have to travel farther and farther to get oil.

For example to Karlsruhe.

Some even go as far as Venice,” says Richard Kinshofer, whose company has a truck with a 12,000-litre tank.

He and others are currently heading in particular for the Krailling tank farm (Starnberg district).

So far he has not received any concrete answers as to why there is a shortage of heating oil in the large tank farms or why they are closed.

There shouldn't be a shortage of oil itself, he says.

There is enough of that around the world.

(By the way: Everything from the region is now also available in our regular Ebersberg newsletter.)

This is confirmed by Alexander Vorbau, spokesman for the Federal Association of Medium-sized Oil Companies in Berlin: "Current reports from our group of members indicate that the demand for heating oil is currently very good, so customers are obviously stocking up for next winter." The federal association from the industry observes heating oil.

Vorbau: "Many industrial companies that have previously generated heat and electricity with natural gas are trying to switch to heating oil." The Ukraine war and its effects send their regards.

Federal association reports great demand

In phases of high demand, the times customers are used to when processing heating oil orders could increase somewhat, according to Vorbau.

Nevertheless: "Customers can rest assured: there is no shortage of heating oil."

When the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline was being serviced and closed for this purpose in July, "people ordered oil like crazy," reports Richard Kinshofer.

Because nobody knew if and how much gas would flow after the maintenance.

Poinger also uses the word “panic buying”: some of his customers who only had their tanks filled up a few months ago wanted to fill the tanks that were almost full again to the brim.

He and his wife Katharina now sit on the phone every day, calling through the tank farm and asking if there is any oil.

They always get the answer: no.

If it does, it has to be done quickly, because many dealers then go to this one warehouse.

Whoever comes first gets oil.
