A big fish is making waves: The mysterious photo of a mega catfish from Hesse is real - and now the angler is also commenting.
Vöhl – The photo apparently caused a stir and guesswork in northern Hesse after it circulated in WhatsApp groups.
And the question arose: is it really real?
The night shot shows a monstrous catfish with a wide open mouth, said to be from the Edersee and 2.36 meters long, next to a man.
The authenticity could initially not be confirmed for the colleagues of the
Waldeckische Landeszeitung
from the IPPEN.MEDIA network.
Not even by several experts who had their say.
Hesse: Photo of mega catfish is real - angler comments
It is now clear: the catch is real!
The
Waldeckische Landeszeitung
verified the photo and even got the angler on the phone who caught the big fish in the Edersee.
And who only commented on the condition of remaining anonymous.
"The pressure on the Edersee as a fishing water is great enough anyway," says the man.
He comes from the small town of Gudensberg, this detail was allowed to become public.
The photo and the catch are therefore already a few weeks old.
"We thought long and hard about posting a picture on WhatsApp or elsewhere," explains the angler.
Now the photo is making the rounds.
And it's always unusual.
"I've already caught big fish of other species, but I would never have dreamed of catching a catfish like this.
That probably only happens once in a lifetime.” The whole thing is reminiscent of the 2.20 meter colossus from Lake Constance, which also caused discussions.
And just a few days ago, an angler pulled a giant fish out of a pond near Markt Schwaben.
Hesse: Angler's friend exclaimed "Oh, you sh..."
The Hessian and his buddy deliberately looked for catfish in the Edersee.
"Oh shit..." his friend exclaimed when the catfish appeared on the surface for the first time.
The two were busy with the fish for a while.
And although the angler describes the catfish as a "delicious food fish", the mega-animal was not on the table.
They dragged him into shallower water, photographed and measured him.
Then the catfish was allowed to swim on.
According to the report, the Edersee catfish is even 2.39 meters long, not 2.36 meters.
Gigantic!
Although not the biggest fish in the country: The longest catfish caught in Germany to date was 2.53 meters.
Of course, it is difficult to verify the Gudensberger's information afterwards - but there is no reason to doubt it either.
Especially since he also reported to the
Waldeckische Landeszeitung
how exactly he went about the catch - you can read more about the background at wlz-online.de.
