Rosario Robles has been released this Friday after three years in preventive detention for the case of millionaire diversions baptized as The Master Scam.

The Secretary of Agrarian Development and Social Development during the term of Enrique Peña Nieto (2012-2018) requested on at least seven occasions to be able to defend herself in freedom since she was admitted to the Santa Martha Acatitla prison in August 2019. The judge denied that request. possibility, again and again, by risk of flight.

Last Wednesday she tried again claiming "various diseases" and "age reasons".

The Attorney General's Office (FGR) then assessed the state of health of Robles, who is 66 years old, studied the relevant security measures to prevent him from evading the process and requested the replacement of preventive detention, as reported by the institution.

The control judge has accepted the request, adopting other precautionary measures, which will be the prohibition of leaving the country without authorization, handing over his passport to the Prosecutor's Office and the presentation every 15 days in court.

Already in recent months, the also former leader of the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD), had made some progress in her procedural situation.

She obtained, for example, a suspension of the arrest warrant against her for the crimes of organized crime and money laundering through an injunction.

The plot in which she is involved is especially emblematic because her arrest was the first major milestone in the plan to fight corruption of the Fourth Transformation, the political project of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

That program focused on the bad practices of the previous PRI and PAN administrations.

However, the investigation of La Estafa Maestra was stalled for months, also due to delays due to the covid-19 pandemic, and has gone through several script twists.

The former secretary negotiated with the Prosecutor's Office and had before her an offer that was to write the epilogue of the process.

During the trial, in early 2021, Robles offered to plead partially guilty to a fraud that, as a whole, embezzled more than 400 million dollars.

The objective was to achieve a sentence reduction, from 21 to six years.

But suddenly the official changed her mind and chose to go to trial and defend his innocence.

The times and the denials of justice, which had always concluded that there was a risk of flight or that the crimes imputed to Robles have not prescribed, led politics to directly accuse the attorney general, Alejandro Gertz Manero, of persecution and the López Obrador himself of political revenge.

"I became a hostage," he wrote in a letter that his daughter, Mariana Moguel, read last March at the gates of the National Palace.

The president has always rejected the thesis that the case is politicized and has limited its development exclusively to the decisions of the judiciary.

"As far as the Executive is concerned, there is no revenge, we do not do that, that is immoral, it is undignified, that takes away any authority and for us the most important thing is moral authority," said the president.

The lawyer of the former secretary, Epigmenio Mendieta, has affirmed tonight that the visit that the president of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation, Arturo Zaldívar, made in May to the Santa Martha Acatitla prison was decisive for the overturning of the process.

The minister then responded to the requests of some 200 detained women and encouraged a public debate on the use of the preventive detention instrument.

Article 20 of the Constitution establishes that this measure cannot exceed a period of two years in any case.

Robles remained detained for more than three years.
