A new study published in the last few days in the scientific journal Lancet Psychiatry shows the potential consequences of the corona virus on the most important part of the body years after infection and recovery.
According to the study, conducted by Oxford University researchers based on official medical data of over a million people around the world, there is an increased risk that those infected with the virus will develop dementia, epilepsy, convulsions, psychosis and "brain fog" in the following two years, which is characterized by cognitive erosion and increased in months The latter as a common complaint especially for those who are sick with "long covid" (a disease whose official characteristics are unclear but recognized in corona patients).
The researchers explained that although respiratory diseases usually increase this risk, in Corona these risks increase significantly compared to the situation after other respiratory diseases.
According to lead researcher Paul Harrison, the study's findings are a mix of good news and alarming at the same time.
The encouraging part is that the risk of developing symptoms of depression and anxiety after infection was not unusual (but similar to the increased risk after the flu) and in fact these symptoms disappear two months later.
The researchers also stated that the risk of developing the mentioned neurological disorders is especially great for those infected with the "Delta" and "Omicron" variants, which is actually considered a less dangerous strain when it comes to the mortality rate of Corona.
The researchers clarified that there is currently no way to know what are the causes of the increased risk of psychiatric disorders among corona patients.
