At least 40 people have died and others are missing in floods caused by torrential monsoon rains in northern India over the past three days.
Heavy rains and floods inundated hundreds of villages, swept away mud houses, inundated roads and destroyed bridges in some parts of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand provinces, the Associated Press quoted local officials as saying.
An official government statement said that landslides and floods in Himachal Pradesh killed 36 people in the past three days and hundreds of people sought refuge in relief camps after leaving their flooded homes, while four people were killed in the neighboring state of Uttar, 13 missing and many homes washed away.
A previous toll yesterday indicated that 15 people were killed as a result of landslides and torrential rains.
