Deutsche Bahn is expanding the route between Oberhausen and Emmerich.

The railway is also looking for aircraft bombs there.

This affects several lines.

Düsseldorf – In North Rhine-Westphalia there will be failures on several train lines from August 26th.

The reason for this is further work on the expansion of the line between Emmerich and Oberhausen.

Among other things, a real mammoth operation is being carried out there to look for possible aircraft bombs.

More than 5000 holes for explosive ordnance probing are then to be drilled, reports 24RHEIN.

The work is planned from August 26th to September 9th and will affect rail traffic in NRW.

Several RE lines are canceled on the 73-kilometer section between the Lower Rhine and the Ruhr area.

Long-distance traffic is also affected.

Some Deutsche Bahn ICE trains have to take detours for weeks.

Bahn is looking for aircraft bombs in NRW: failures on these train lines

The route between Emmerich and Oberhausen will be completely closed from 9 p.m. on August 26th until 9 p.m. on September 9th.

This has the following effects on these train lines:

  • RE5

(Koblenz - Bonn - Cologne - Düsseldorf - Duisburg - Oberhausen - Wesel): The trains end at Oberhausen Hbf

  • RE19

(Düsseldorf - Duisburg - Oberhausen - Wesel - Arnhem): The trains already end at Oberhausen Hbf

  • RE49

(Wesel - Oberhausen - Essen - Wuppertal): The trains are canceled between Oberhausen Hbf and Wesel.

    There are replacement buses

  • ICE line

Frankfurt – Cologne – Duisburg – Amsterdam: trains will be diverted between Cologne and Utrecht via Venlo from 27 August to 9 September.

As a result, all stops in Düsseldorf, Duisburg, Oberhausen and Arnhem are canceled.

Alternatively, the ICE trains stop in Mönchengladbach and 's-Hertogenbosch.

In some cases, the Cologne Hbf stop is also cancelled.

Then Cologne-Ehrenfeld is headed for as a replacement station.

Railway route Oberhausen - Emmerich: Bahn is looking for aerial bombs and is expanding

Expansion of the Oberhausen – Emmerich railway line

The railway line between Oberhausen and Emmerich is around 73 kilometers long and is part of the important European freight corridor between Rotterdam in the Netherlands and Genoa in Italy.

So far, however, the Oberhausen – Emmerich route has only had two tracks and has therefore reached its limits in recent years.

In the current expansion, the route is to be expanded to three tracks, thus relieving rail traffic in the entire region.

The main focus of the work in August and September is the search for possible duds from the Second World War.

Corresponding explosive ordnance probing is to be carried out at around 5,000 locations through drilling.

If incendiary duds are actually found, the experts from the explosive ordnance clearance service would probably defuse the bombs.

Among other things, this work takes place in Oberhausen, Dinslaken, Voerde, Empel, Millingen, Emmerich and on the section between Wesel train station and the Haldern stop.

But these are not the only works in the period.

Deutsche Bahn has announced that they want to bundle as much construction work as possible in the approximately two weeks.

Work is therefore also being carried out on tracks, platforms, noise protection walls and overhead lines.

This could also lead to construction noise in the corresponding areas.
