The rise in canteen prices worries mayors and parents of students

Elected officials doubt more and more to be able to support the entire increase in the canteen budget, which also includes the salaries of the supervisory staff.


Eating in the canteen will cost more at the start of the school year and perhaps even more at Christmas.

As early as May, the Association of Mayors of France (AMF) had warned that inflation (on salaries, foodstuffs, energy, etc.) would affect the price of meals in primary school.

The increase could be between

“5 and 10%”

for the school year, according to Philippe Laurent, vice-president of the AMF and UDI mayor of Sceaux, which corresponds to the request of catering providers, Sodexo, Elior or even Compass.

The pressure is mounting.

These private catering companies manage 40% of school canteens.

“At each start of the school year, their prices are updated, according to a contractual calculation method,

explains Philippe Pont-Nourat, president of the National Union of Collective Catering (SNRC).

In 2021, they increased by 1.1% and this year by around 4%.

That's not enough considering inflation."
