London: Criticism of tank biathlon in the Russian military

10.46 a.m .:

According to British military experts, there is criticism within the Russian armed forces that military competitions and ceremonies are being held despite the war in Ukraine.

"A significant segment of Russian military and security experts are likely to believe that it is inappropriate to continue dedicating forces to ceremonial military events while Russian troops are suffering heavy casualties in Ukraine," the Defense Ministry's daily intelligence update said in London.

The British experts quoted a minister from the breakaway pro-Russian Donetsk People's Republic as complaining about the holding of competitions such as the tank biathlon, a driving and shooting competition between tank crews and festivals by military bands.

Federal government: Economic slump in Russia after EU sanctions

9.39 a.m .:

The federal government considers the EU sanctions against Russia to be effective and expects an economic slump of up to 15 percent this year.

This emerges from a response from the Federal Ministry of Economics to the Left MP Sören Pellmann, which is available to the dpa news agency.

The ministry's response said: "The sanctions are having a severe impact on the Russian economy and will continue to have an impact.

Reliable calculations predict a recession in Russia, which means a reduction in Russian gross domestic product in a range of 6 to 15 percent for the year 2022.« The Council of the EU assumes a decline in Russian gross domestic product by »more than eleven percent«.

After the Russian attack on Ukraine, Germany and the other EU countries jointly agreed on six sanctions packages, including a coal and an oil embargo.

The ministry's response reads: "Among other things, the sanctions have an impact on the course of the war, since they weaken military capabilities and the industrial base in the long term."

Pellmann doubts the assessment: “The fact that the federal government continues to claim that the sanctions would harm Russia more than us is absurd”.

Rather, the Russian President Vladimir Putin will hardly be hit, but Germany and especially the East will be hit very hard.

Selenskyj congratulates world boxing champion Usyk

8.17 a.m .:

For the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj, the victory of his compatriot and heavyweight world champion Alexander Usyk also has a highly symbolic effect.

“Difficult, but so important and necessary victory!

Defending the world title is a symbol that all those who belong to the Cossacks will not give up their title, but will fight for it and will definitely win!« tweeted Zelenskyy, congratulating Usyk on his victory against the British ex- Champion Anthony Joshua.

The 35-year-old Usyk had prevailed against Joshua for the second time on Sunday night in the Superdome of Jeddah in Saudi Arabia.

Usyk retained his belts from the WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO associations after the narrow points judgment (115:113, 113:115, 116:112).

Joshua had lost his title to the then challenger in September 2021 in a points defeat at London's Tottenham Hotspur football stadium and now missed a revenge.

For the favorite Usyk it was the 20th victory in the 20th professional fight of his career.

For Usyk, too, the duel was more than just a boxing match, because it should also give his compatriots hope in a dark time of the war.

The boxer made it possible for the world championship fight in Ukraine to be followed free of charge on state television and in the live stream.

Usyk volunteered for a month in the war of aggression launched by Russia, but then, at the urging of his compatriots, decided to fight as a boxer again.
