A study conducted by the United Nations Environment Agency warned that a large number of birds in Africa are threatened with extinction due to the devastating drought sweeping the continent.
According to the study, about 87 percent of African sites are at risk of climate change due to changing weather patterns in the center and east of the continent, which has depleted natural water systems and caused devastating drought, reducing the water sources that birds depend on during their migration journeys.
The study stated that about 10 percent of more than 2,000 bird species in Africa, including dozens of migratory birds, are threatened with extinction, with 28 species such as the Madagascar fish eagle, Tita falcon and the hooded eagle.
The study indicated that the hotter and drier conditions due to climate change make it difficult for migratory breeds that are losing their water sources and breeding areas, as many of them are now at risk of extinction or are forced to completely change their migration patterns by settling in the colder northern regions.
