The negotiations between the teachers union and the Ministry of Finance will resume today (Sunday) at 12:30.

This, in the background of threats by Histadrut Chairman Yaffe Ben David to prevent the opening of classes on September 1 next week. The meeting between the parties will take place after they failed to reach progress regarding the main issues in the discussions held last week, and in the shadow of mutual accusations by the Ministry of Education and the Histadrut against the Treasury - and vice versa.

The main issue the parties are dealing with is the attempt to bridge the gaps in the starting teacher's salary. While the Ministry of Finance wants to raise the salary from 6,000 shekels to 9,000, the Histadrut wants it to be 10 and a half thousand shekels. Also, the parties are trying to reach a compromise on matters Offsetting the teachers' days off during the holidays.

On Thursday, Education Minister Yifat Shasha-Biton attacked the Ministry of Finance under the threat of shutting down the education system.

"Despite my efforts in recent months, the compromises and extensive agreements I reached with the teachers' organizations, I am aware time and time again that the officials of the Ministry of Finance are not interested in reaching a real solution and are not interested in agreements," she said.

"The Ministry of Finance is indifferent to the danger that the school year will not start."

The Minister of Education appealed to Prime Minister Yair Lapid and demanded an emergency discussion in the government this coming Sunday, following the crisis.

"It goes without saying that the proper functioning of the education system, as well as the possibility of a strike at the beginning of the school year, widely affect the entire Israeli economy," Shasha-Biton wrote.

"Therefore - I will ask to convene an emergency discussion of the government this coming Sunday, even during the government recess, to find a solution to the education crisis and a successful opening of the school year. We should not allow Israeli students further uncertainty on the night of August 31st."

The Minister of Finance said the next day that he was "surprised" by the accusations of the Minister of Education, the Secretary General of the Teachers' Union and the Chairman of the Local Government Center Haim Bibbs, and called to "stop the politicization and populism on the backs of the teachers, parents and children."

He attacked Biebs and pointed out that he is a member of the Likud Center, served in 2015 as Netanyahu's chief of staff in the Likud elections and claimed that he is "the man who wants to succeed Netanyahu after his retirement from politics."

"The same accusations that were not heard during the 12 years of Netanyahu's rule, during which an average of 3,400 classrooms were built per year, and are being heard now, when during our shift, approximately 4,800 classrooms were built in one year, 40% more than during Netanyahu's time, alongside the fact that during Netanyahu's rule, Biebs did not make any claims against The government, for failing to sign a comprehensive collective agreement with the teachers union since it ended in 2016, is surprising and raises questions," he wrote.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Yair Lapid met with the Minister of Education and the Minister of Finance in order to advance the negotiations on the teachers' salary agreement.

After the discussion, he spoke with the Secretary General of the Teachers' Union. "Systems are best measured in a situation of chaos - and now we have the opportunity to improve and optimize the system," he said.

After the meeting, Lapid wrote on Twitter: "I spoke during the day with the Minister of Education, who informed me about the preparations Towards the start of the school year and on the progress of negotiations with the Teachers' Union. Yesterday I met with the Minister of Finance on the same issue. The ministers of the government and I are determined to reach a solution in the coming days."
