Fuel prices: slight drop for gasoline, diesel rises

2022-08-22T15:07:40.581Z

After several uninterrupted weeks of sharp falls, prices at the pump have stabilized over the last seven days.

Mixed week for motorists.

While gasoline prices continue (very slightly) to fall, the liter of SP95-E10 going from 1.7362 to 1.7305 euros (half a cent), but that of diesel fuel has experienced a marked increase.

The latter cost an average of 1.84 euros per liter against 1.80 seven days earlier according to figures from the Ministry of Ecological Transition.

For other fuels, the reductions are of the same order.

The SP95 thus lost a penny compared to last week (from around 1.78 to 1.77 euros), as did the SP98 (from 1.8425 to 1.8331 euros).

LPG, for its part, experienced a slight increase (from 0.8594 to 0.8677 euros).

This reversal of the curve is surprising since at the same time, the barrel of Brent continued to fall on the financial markets.

It is now trading at 98.2 dollars per unit on average, almost 6 dollars less than the previous week.

More aid from September

Despite this stagnation, prices remain well below what motorists experienced several weeks ago.

At the start of the summer, fuel prices peaked, for several weeks exceeding the highly symbolic two-euro mark.

Since then, these have dropped considerably.

In July, for example, diesel and SP95-E10 lost around 20 cents.

And over the first two weeks of August the drop is 7 cents for each of the two main fuels.

A breath of fresh air for motorists' wallets as aid from the government and TotalEnergies will ramp up at the start of the school year.

Bruno Le Maire explained that the discount will reach 30 cents from September, before dropping to 10 in November and December.

The French oil giant has announced that it will drop from 12 to 20 cents from October 1 to 31, then to 10 cents for the last two months of the year.
