In the middle of Stockholm: the police defused a bomb in a bag on the festival grounds

At a festival in Stockholm, the police found an abandoned bag.

It was an explosive device.

The blocking of the area in the middle of the city lasted until the morning.

STOCKHOLM — A bag of explosives was found late Sunday evening at the annual culture festival with thousands of visitors in central Stockholm.

This was confirmed by the police in the Swedish capital on Monday (August 22).

After finding the bag, investigators cordoned off the area where it was found.

Hundreds of people had been brought to safety when the bag was discovered on Sunday evening at the music and theater festival in the center of Sweden's capital.

The visitors were sent away.

A bomb squad moved in to defuse the abandoned bag with the suspected explosives.

The initially unknown content was classified as dangerous from the start.

The closure of the festival site could only be lifted on Monday morning.

The police are investigating.

After finding the abandoned bag on Sunday, the police in Stockholm launched a preliminary investigation.

“Now all components have to be examined.

Only after the investigations at the National Forensic Center can we say whether the dangerous object was functional," said police chief Erik Åkerlund, according to a press release.

So far no one has been arrested.

The explosive device was found in Kungsträdgården, a public park in Stockholm.

Part of the annual culture festival took place there from August 17th to 21st.

Kungsträdgården served as a family area, as the organizer announced on its website.

Circus, dance music and theater were offered there for children and families, but also handicraft tents and book buses.

It is still unclear where the explosive device in this part of the festival site came from.

An incident that only briefly follows a report from Malmö, Sweden.

A man was shot dead in a shopping center there on Friday.

The alleged perpetrator is 15 years old.
