There has been no major damage so far, but the DWD warning card continues to shimmer in bright signal colors.

The heavy rain of the past 24 hours is now followed by new thunderstorms.

  • The heavy rain warning for the south of Upper Bavaria has been lifted.

  • Thunderstorm potential in Bavaria is increasing again: After the heavy rain phase, a new change in the weather is now upon us.

  • This weather ticker for Bavaria is updated regularly.

Update from August 20, 5:55 p.m .:

Not only Helene Fischer’s fans were in the rain on Saturday afternoon.

A concert of Munich freedom was to take place on the Olympic grounds.

But the masses of rain threw a spanner in the works for the band.

The concert had to be pushed back a few minutes.

Update from August 20, 5 p.m.:

Bavaria has not yet survived the thunderstorm weekend.

On Saturday afternoon, the warning apps Katwarn and Nina triggered in the Munich area and also in Upper Bavaria, Swabia and parts of Franconia.

Thunderstorms passed over these regions.

In the north of Munich there was even a DWD warning of "heavy heavy rain with precipitation amounts of up to 40 l/m² per hour and gusts of wind with speeds of up to 60 km/h (17m/s, 33kn, Bft 7) and small-grain hail".

The warning is in effect until 6 p.m.

The fans of Helene Fischer, whose concert will take place in Munich-Riem in the evening, should also get a proper shower.

Heavy rain warning for the south of Bavaria has been lifted

Update from August 20, 3:33 p.m

.: The storm warning for the south of Upper Bavaria was lifted.

This means that the risk of heavy rain has been banned for the time being.

Fortunately, the damage remained manageable.

There was a landslide near Markt Oberstdorf in the Oberallgäu district on Saturday night.

No one was injured, police said.

Dirt fell on a road, spread over a small creek and a parking lot.

In total, an area of 10 by 30 meters was covered with earth.

The road to the Tiefenbach district was closed by the fire brigade.

The constant rain caused the water level of many rivers to rise.

The areas of the smaller southern tributaries to the upper Danube, the Altmühl, on the upper reaches of the Iller and Lech, the Bavarian Lake Constance tributaries and the Inn area were particularly affected, as reported by the flood intelligence service.

"On medium-sized and larger rivers, which are observed by the level measuring points with reporting levels, the amounts of rain have only occasionally led to overflowing." However, due to the very dynamic weather development, floods are difficult to predict.

After heavy rain and severe weather warning: New thunderstorms approaching

The rain is now followed by the next weather change.

The thunderstorm danger increases again.

There is currently a warning of "strong thunderstorms" for all of Bavaria, but no longer with severe weather potential.

Again and again, storms will move over the Free State from the west to the south-east.

Update from August 20, 10:52 a.m

.: The highest possible warning level for eastern Upper Bavaria has been lifted.

There is also a storm warning for the extreme south-east of Bavaria.

The German Weather Service warns this Saturday: “There will be heavy continuous rain of varying intensity.

Precipitation amounts between 50 l/m² and 80 l/m² are expected.” The following districts are affected:

Severe weather warning on Saturday for southern Upper Bavaria: These districts are affected

  • Berchtesgaden country

  • Traunstein

  • Parts of the district of Rosenheim

  • Parts of the district of Altötting

The severe weather warning is in effect until 3 p.m.

The large amount of rain in a short period of time can be so dangerous because the soil throughout Bavaria has dried out hopelessly.

Dry soils can hardly absorb any water, the water collects on the surface and flows like a torrent into the valley on hillsides.

The possible consequences: floods and landslides.

A similar weather situation recently devastated parts of the Allgäu and southern Upper Bavaria in July 2021.

Update from August 20, 8:32 a.m .:

The German Weather Service has shifted the areas for the highest level severe weather warning slightly to the east.

Yesterday, the official storm warning of extremely heavy rain was still in place for large parts of the Bavarian Alps.

Fortunately, fears of flooding have hardly been confirmed.

So far the damage has been limited.

Overflowing cellars, streets blocked by branches and streams that have burst their banks: the Bavarian fire brigades in particular had a lot to do on Saturday night.

But the number of major accidents and injured people is fortunately limited, said a spokesman for the Bavaria situation center.

A picture from Peißenberg on Thursday evening shows what a heavy rain event can trigger.

While the rain eased off in many places on Friday afternoon, more is expected to fall again in the coming evening and night hours.

For example, alarm level three applies to Munich and the surrounding area, with rainfall of 50 to 80 liters per square meter expected.

It should hit the edge of the Alps even harder in the next few hours.

Here in the district town of Weilheim in Upper Bavaria, so much rain fell at once on Thursday evening that some areas of the city were flooded.

Now only a few kilometers south near the Alps: official storm warning of extremely heavy continuous rain.

You have to reckon with 80 to 140 liters of rain per square meter.

The edge of the Alps from the Allgäu to the district of Miesbach is affected.

Update from August 19, 10:40 a.m .:

Continuous rain in Bavaria could lead to flooding and flooding in some regions (see previous update).

"Regionally, larger regions can also be affected by flooding."

Due to the "very dynamic weather development" in the morning it was still unclear exactly where streams and rivers could overflow their banks.

"However, the risk of being hit by heavy heavy rain increases towards the south and east," wrote the flood experts.

The Bavarian Red Cross has ordered alarm level 1 of 3 for the air rescuers of the water rescue service, as a BRK spokesman announced.

The "Air Rescue Specialists" are emergency services who are flown over the operational area in a helicopter and can rescue injured or helpless people.

Most recently, according to the BRK, the air rescuers from the Bavarian water rescue service were deployed during the Ahr valley flood in Rhineland-Palatinate.

Weather: continuous rain at the edge of the Alps - up to 140 liters per square meter

The German Weather Service warns of continuous heavy rain on the edge of the Alps (see previous updates).

During Friday and Saturday, "extremely heavy continuous rain" between 50 and 140 liters per square meter is possible within 48 hours, intensified by thunderstorms.

The DWD announced this on Friday.

It could also rain heavily in the rest of Old Bavaria, with amounts between 50 and 80 liters per square meter.

According to the weather service, the trigger is a high altitude low that moves from the Lake Constance area over Bavaria in the course of the day.

Smaller bodies of water in particular could therefore rise sharply and burst their banks within a short period of time, the experts at the Bavarian flood intelligence service wrote on their website.

"Regionally, larger regions can also be affected by flooding." Due to the "very dynamic weather development", no regional focus has yet emerged.

"However, the risk of being hit by heavy heavy rain increases towards the south and east."

Heavy thunderstorms in the Munich region: hail, heavy rain and gusts of wind with up to 85 km/h possible

Update from August 18, 7:23 p.m .:

Heavy thunderstorms are coming from the south.

In the Munich region, there can be heavy rain with precipitation of up to 40 liters per square meter and gusts of wind with speeds of up to 85 kilometers per hour.

Katwarn and the German Weather Service (DWD) report this on Thursday evening.

Hail with grain sizes of up to two centimeters is also possible.

In view of the approaching storm, Katwarn warns that flooding of basements and streets is possible, and landslides can also occur.

Trees could be uprooted or roofs damaged, so people in Germany should close doors and windows as much as possible and secure outdoor objects.

In addition, you should not stay outside if possible and if you do, keep your distance from buildings, trees and high-voltage lines.

DWD and Katwarn predict continuous rain and flooding

Update from August 18, 5:46 p.m

.: After the first thunderstorms on Thursday, there could be prolonged precipitation on Friday in the south of Bavaria and in the Upper Palatinate, and there could also be heavy rain in some areas near the Alps.

This was announced by the German Weather Service (DWD) on Thursday.

The Katwarn warning system has also issued a warning of "continuous heavy rain" for the region around the state capital.

According to DWD and Katwarn, between 50 and 80 liters per square meter can fall here.

On Saturday, showers and thunderstorms are expected from the northwest, especially in the afternoon.

Weather experts are warning of flooding in numerous districts in southern Bavaria in view of the high levels of precipitation expected on Friday and Saturday.

Rivers such as the Loisach, Ammer and Isar could partly reach flood notification level 1, as reported by the responsible water management authorities.

That could mean "smaller proliferations in places," it said.

Notification level 2 is also possible on the Isar in the Munich area, so agricultural and forestry areas could be flooded - there could also be slight traffic obstructions on main roads and municipal roads.

Heat wave ends in Bavaria: risk of thunderstorms high on Thursday

First report:

Munich – Heat, dryness, drought: Germany is suffering from dry weather that has been going on for months.

In Bavaria, nature in the north in particular fights for every drop of water.

The current heat wave will end on Thursday, rain is in sight.

However, the amounts of precipitation do not seem to be sufficient to counteract the drought.

The German Weather Service (DWD) expects the first thunderstorms in Bavaria on Thursday.

From late morning, "rain interspersed with local thunderstorms" is likely in the Alps.

In the other regions there will be isolated thunderstorms with heavy rain.

In the evening the risk of thunderstorms increases enormously.

In the Alps, "local exceeding of the storm thresholds of 25 l/sqm in a short time cannot be ruled out", there could also be hail and gusts of wind.

"In the afternoon between the eastern edge of the Alps and the Bavarian Forest, heavy gusts of wind around 90 km/h cannot be completely ruled out."

According to the weather map from

The Weather Channel

, the south, north and east of Bavaria are particularly affected.

50 liters per square meter would fall by the weekend, and 100 liters per square meter are also possible locally in the Alps.

"Drought drama" continues: New heat wave coming next week

"It's really intense," meteorologist Dominik Jung from

wetter.net

is shocked.

The heavy rain that was also announced for West Germany simply disappeared from the weather models.

Only in Bavaria is there still a lot going down, there could be floods or even flash floods due to the heavy rain.

The rain is not enough for the end of the drought here either, the "drought drama" continues.

"The ground is so dry and hard that it can hardly absorb any water and after that it's often dry, sunny and very warm again from the weekend," says Jung.

The Germans are literally caught in permanent heat mode.

In the next week, the highs will rise again to 30 degrees and above, at the top to 35 or 36 degrees.
