The loser of Kenya's presidential election, Raila Odinga, has lodged a complaint against the election result with the country's highest court.

The 78-year-old accuses the IEBC Electoral Commission of corruption.

There are also discrepancies between the turnout figures and the result.

"We have enough evidence to prove all the crime that was going on," Odinga said at a press conference.

His lawyer declared that the commission was a "criminal cesspool."

The Odinga faction accuses IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati of "dictatorial behavior" during the count.

Odinga had already announced legal action against his defeat shortly after the announcement of the result.

According to the electoral commission, he was only around two percentage points behind his rival, former Vice President William Ruto.

Shortly thereafter, Odinga's supporters tried to show the alleged fraud with bizarre arithmetic games.

The election commission is divided: Shortly after the announcement, four out of seven members refused to recognize the official election results.

The deputy chairwoman of the electoral commission, Juliana Cherera, described the results as "absurd".

However, election observers from the African Union and the East African Development Community (IGAD) did not find any irregularities during the vote.

The court now has two weeks to decide on the complaint.

If the judges come to the conclusion that there have been violations of the rules, the election must be repeated within 60 days of the annulment.

The trial could further exacerbate tensions between the Odinga and Ruto camps.

As soon as the result was announced, riots broke out in the strongholds of Odinga's supporters.

Tension between rival camps has been tense for a while

Even before the election, the mood in Kenya was extremely tense.

Every election in the East African country since 2002 has been contentious, and the electoral commission's reputation has also suffered.

After the 2007 election, there was serious unrest in which more than 1,100 people were killed.

For Odinga, the election was already the fifth unsuccessful attempt to become president - it is also not his first lawsuit.

In the election four years ago, Odinga went to court after his defeat by the incumbent President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Odinga was right at the time, but he lost the repeated election again.
