He was the "man of the first hour" in the youth exchange with France: Franz Janning (72), who died at the age of 72, is mourned in the Isarwinkel.

Lenggries – “Life rests on faith.” Franz Janning lived according to this principle of Adolph Kolping and, in this sense, was committed to both the Lenggries Kolping Family and the partnership with Brittany.

He passed away today at the age of 72.

"He had been in poor health for some time," says widow Hildegard Janning.

At the requiem in the Lenggries parish church, the life of the deceased was comprehensively honored.

"He paved the way for our partnership with the communities in Brittany," said former mayor Werner Weindl in his speech.

"Franz was the man from the start in 1970, when he and a few other young people visited a Breton group led by Father Kerhoas in our youth hostel," says Weindl.

"That broke the ice and the Bretons found a place in Lenggries that became their home away from home."

Mourning also in Brittany

In 1971, Janning then founded the youth exchange, which still exists today.

Almost 3000 young people took part in the mutual encounters.

It was also Janning who paved the way for the official partnership, which was signed in 1981, with an application to the municipality of Lenggries.

"Franz is one of the first important links in the beautiful chain of friendship between Bavaria and Brittany," writes Catherine Corbel, president of the Breton partnership association.

Her personal letter was read out at the requiem by Christelle Kiefersauer-Mercier, chairwoman of the Lenggrieser partnership association.

"This Saturday we will pray for Francis in the Notre-Dame chapel in Chatelaudren," the letter said.

The youth groups are currently meeting for a return visit in Brittany.

"Our appreciation and affection goes to Hildegard Janning and her family," said Corbel.

"You gave so many Bretons such a warm welcome."

Commitment to the Kolping Family

Franz Janning was not only chairman of the partnership committee and association for many years, but was also significantly involved in the local Kolping family.

He was its chairman for around 40 years.

"For him, once Kolping, always Kolping," said Cilly Wasensteiner in the obituary of the Kolping family.

"We owe our honorary chairman a great debt of gratitude, because only God knows what he has done." Herbert Walter, the former Lenggrieser chaplain and current pastor of Markt Schwaben, also remembered the deceased with very personal words in his sermon.

Franz Janning has always lived the Kolping principles out of conviction.
