(CNN Spanish) --

The primary elections in Florida will take place this Tuesday, August 23, a contest in which voters will choose the Republican and Democratic candidates for the general or midterm elections to be held in November with a view to renewing part of Congress and other positions such as governor of the state and various positions in local offices.

Here's everything you need to know about Florida primaries:

  • What elections are in the United States in the remainder of 2022?

What is voted on in the Florida primaries?

From the Democratic primaries in Florida will emerge the candidate who will compete in November with the governor of Florida, Republican Ron DeSantis, who is running for re-election.

Plus, he's likely running for his party's 2024 presidential bid: Florida's governor ranks second in almost every national 2024 Republican primary poll that includes Trump as an option, according to Harry Enten's analysis of CNN.

Governor

The two main contenders to compete with DeSantis are:

  • Former Governor Charlie Crist (Democrat)

  • State Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried (Democrat)

Crist, currently serving his third term in the US House of Representatives, was elected Florida governor in 2006 as a Republican but left that party in 2010 after losing a US Senate race and is now running as a Democrat.

Fried, for her part, is the only Democrat holding elected office in the entire state and has built her campaign around the promise of "Something New."

In addition, in the state primaries there are races for the US Senate and House of Representatives.

Republicans:

  • Marco Rubio (reelection)

Democrats:

  • Val Demings

  • Ricardo De La Fuente

  • Brian Rush

  • william sanchez

Marco Rubio, who currently holds the Senate seat and is seeking re-election, still has the upper hand in this race, but Democratic Rep. Val Demings, who is heavily favored to win her party's Senate nomination on August 23, maintains interesting contest raising an impressive amount of money.

While Rubio has the backing of some of the major law enforcement groups in the state, Demings is leaning on her record as a former Orlando police chief to try to refute their attempts to tie her to the national party.

"In the Senate, I will protect Florida from bad ideas like defunding the police. That's crazy," she says in her first ad.

How and where to vote in the Florida primary?

To vote in Florida's primary election you have two options: by mail or in person.

You should know that Florida law establishes that only those who are registered as affiliates of a political party can participate in primaries, with exceptions such as the election of candidates for judges and other non-partisan positions.

Floridians had until July 25 to register.

Vote by Mail:

All registered voters can request a ballot to cast their vote by mail at their county Supervisor of Elections office.

You must request it before 5 pm on Saturday, August 13 for the primary and return it with your vote no later than 7:00 pm (local time) on Election Day.

In- Person Early Voting:

All counties offer in-person early voting options for both elections beginning 27 days in advance.

For the primaries, they can do it from Monday, August 8 to Saturday, August 21 from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm (local time).

Voting in person on Election Day:

If you prefer to vote in person on Election Day (the state primary is August 23) you will be able to go to an assigned vote center where your ballot will be delivered to you.

The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
