An eight-year-old migrant girl has drowned in the Rio Grande as it passes through Ciudad Juárez, in the state of Chihuahua, on the border between Mexico and the United States.
A fire crew has recovered her body from the riverbed this Monday.
The minor, of Guatemalan origin, was crossing the Rio Grande with her mother when the strong currents separated them.
Both were trying to cross into the United States.
According to a statement from the Attorney General of the State of Chihuahua, the woman who lost her daughter will receive psychological care and assistance measures through the Victim Assistance Unit, while her legal situation is resolved.
Due to the intense rains in Chihuahua, the water level of the river has increased, something that has made it difficult for all the people who try to cross it in this area.
The region is experiencing a record migratory flow to the United States, whose Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has intercepted more than 1.6 million people since last October.
In addition, Mexico received a record of more than 58,000 refugee applications in the first half of 2022, an annual increase of almost 15%, according to the Mexican Commission for Refugee Assistance (Comar).
