In September, most Germans can look forward to the energy flat rate.

But when exactly will the money come and how will consumers get it?

The most important questions and answers.

Berlin – The high energy prices are a huge burden for German consumers.

For this reason, the federal government has decided on the so-called energy price flat rate in its relief package.

In concrete terms, this means that everyone who is subject to income tax in Germany will receive an extra 300 euros in September – just like that.

Sounds simple, but consumers should keep a few things in mind.

Who receives the energy price flat rate?

Anyone who lives in Germany and receives taxable income there in 2022.

This includes, for example, income from agriculture and forestry, from commercial operations, from self-employment or very classic income as an employee from active employment.

Apprentices are also eligible.

Just like mini-jobbers and temporary workers in agriculture and forestry, volunteers in the federal voluntary service, working students and students in paid internships.

Do pensioners really get nothing?

Yes, things are different for retirees.

A large proportion of retirees actually get nothing here.

Only those who have to pay tax on their pension or who also had a part-time or full-time job in 2022 are also entitled to the 300 euros.

Are taxes still deducted from the 300 euros?

Who gets how much?

Yes, the energy flat rate is taxable.

The taxpayers' association has calculated how much of the energy flat rate remains after tax has been deducted for three model households:

When is the energy flat rate paid and how do you get it?

The lump sum is to be paid by the employer with the first wage payment in September.

It therefore does not have to be requested separately.

How do employers finally get the money they paid out as an energy allowance?

Employers can take the energy flat rate separately from the total amount of wage tax to be paid.

How do the self-employed and freelancers get the energy flat rate?

Anyone who is self-employed or freelance receives the energy flat rate via the tax.

To do this, the self-employed must reduce the advance income tax payment for the third quarter of 2022 by the corresponding amount.

Those who do not make an advance payment will only receive the money back from the tax office in the coming year via the tax return.
