Clubs in the Tölzer Land have high hopes: The enthusiasm that prevailed at the "European Championships" could also spill over into popular sport.

Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen

– The "European Championships" in Munich are over.

The city was in a state of emergency for eleven days.

There was a party atmosphere all over Munich, and there was even talk of another summer fairy tale.

Germany is at the top of the medal table, and the German team has caused a lot of enthusiasm, especially in athletics.

Are the athletics departments of the sports clubs in the region now hoping for more influx from these successes?

A short poll.

"There could not have been a better advertisement for the sport"

For Anton Böhm, athletics trainer at TV Bad Tölz, there could not have been better advertising for the sport than these European Championships.

"It's great that the competition caused such a stir," he says.

"I'm happy when it makes an impression on the children." Whether more young people will actually find their way into athletics through the big sporting event will only become apparent after the summer holidays, says Böhm.

Mirko Naumann, chairman of TuS Geretsried, is optimistic: "Hopefully, such a great European championship at home will make itself felt." It is still too early to be able to determine an increase, but "you can tell that the spark jumps over".

On Friday, Naumann watched the competition with an athletics group from Geretsried on site in Munich and emphasized: "It's definitely something that the kids are excited about." the club chairman.

Winter sports and athletics compete

TuS Geretsried can't complain anyway when it comes to young athletes.

"There could be more for the over-14s, but on the other hand we are overrun in the children's area," says Naumann.

"But we are happy about everyone who comes."

Eva Stadler, trainer at the Lenggrieser Gymnastics Club, also hopes that the "European Championships" will get more people enthusiastic about athletics.

"You can't find anything directly yet, but I would like to see it," she says.

Above all, Stadler would be happy to see more refugees in the club.

"You could see that the German national team is benefiting from the refugee movement."

According to Stadler, alpine athletics is struggling with competition from winter sports.

It is particularly difficult to win over those over the age of ten.

“Young people switch to other sports at an early age.

Many also give up completely at the age of twelve or fourteen.” And yet she hopes: “Perhaps the European Championships will now be an incentive for many to continue after all.”

European Championships also good promotion for climbing

At the moment, TV Lenggries is well positioned among athletes under ten years old.

"On paper, there are around 30 children," says Stadler.

"We have to make sure that we bring trainers here so that we can form groups that are as small as possible."

Disciplines such as climbing, which otherwise gets little TV airtime, also received a lot of attention during the event.

Against the magnificent backdrop of Königsplatz, the climbers fought for medals in the up-and-coming trend sport.

Could that also mean that the climbing hall on the Tölzer Flinthöhe could get full?

"Climbing is becoming more and more popular in general," says Caroline Groß, an employee at the DAV climbing center.

At the moment you can't say anything and you have to wait for the summer holidays here too.

"When the weather is good, it's quieter here because you can do a lot outside," says Groß.

In any case, she sees good advertising in the “European Championships”.

"It's nice to see that sports like climbing are becoming more public."
