From Cáceres to Lloret de Mar: the Spanish locations of 'The House of the Dragon'

As it did with 'Game of Thrones', HBO took the filming of its new fiction to different locations in Spain

More than three years after the controversial end of

Game of Thrones

, the universe loosely based on the novels by George RR Martin returned to the screens this Monday with the premiere of

The House of the Dragon

(HBOMax).

This prequel, set nearly 200 years before the events of the original series, follows the adventures of the Targaryen family, ancestors of the much-celebrated Daenerys, brought to life by Emilia Clarke.

But if there is another element to highlight that unites both productions, it is the recording of several of its sequences in Spanish territory.

Different castles, cities, towns and natural enclaves have served as locations to represent Poniente, where most of the plot takes place.

We review some of the Spanish places that have been the scene of the filming of

The House of the Dragon

.

Caceres (Extremadura)

One of the

Game of Thrones

locations that fans have etched in their memories is King's Landing, the capital of the seven kingdoms.

The imposing city reappears in the prequel and the film crew has returned to Cáceres to bring it to life, a task that it shared in the original series with Dubrovnik (Croatia).

The medieval quarter of the city of Extremadura has served to represent the streets of the fictional enclave, also taking advantage of facades such as those of the Palace of Toledo-Moctezuma.

As usual, some modifications were made, such as the addition of a fountain with lions in the Plaza de San Jorge.

The City Council of Cáceres described the fact that the city was chosen for filming as "a priceless publicity campaign".

Lloret de Mar (Catalonia)

The province of Girona will once again be a place of pilgrimage for fans of the franchise.

If in

Game of Thrones

the capital served mainly to set the scenes located in the city of Braavos, now the town of Lloret de Mar has been chosen by HBO to place some of the moments of the new series.

Specifically, they have worked on the Santa Clotilde gardens, a space with a promenade full of vegetation that easily lends itself to medieval fantasy.

La Calahorra (Andalusia)

Castles inevitably form a crucial part of any series set in or inspired by a medieval world.

The House of the Dragon

, like its predecessor, is no exception.

If for the last production they used imposing fortresses such as Almodóvar del Río (Córdoba) and Zafra (Guadalajara), this time they opted for a new location: La Calahorra (Granada).

Its 16th-century castle, located on a hill 1,250 meters above sea level, was used to shoot exterior and interior scenes.

For the latter, the spaces were decorated with paintings and other elements in accordance with the narrative of the series.

Trujillo (Extremadura)

Cáceres has not been the only town in Extremadura to be visited and used by the HBO team.

The town of Trujillo, whose castle was used for the sequence where the Lannister family invaded the fortress of High Garden in

Game of Thrones

, appears again in

House of the Dragon

.

This time, some scenes located in a market that the team set up in the main square of the town were recorded there.

In that place, the significant substitution of the equestrian statue of Francisco Pizarro for another of a dragon took place, a creature that, as the title of the fiction indicates, is of great importance in history.

In addition to the main square, scenes were shot in the old pool of La Alberca and in the Casa Museo de la Coria.
