Alaska Airlines flight diverted to Seattle due to engine cover problem

By Andi Babineau and David Williams

This is a photo Alaska Airlines passenger Greg Anderson took on Alaska Airlines Flight 558.

Shown here is the engine with the cover removed.

An Alaska Airlines flight bound for San Diego was diverted back to Seattle shortly after takeoff Monday morning, according to a statement from the airline.

Flight 558 "reported unusual vibration on the left side of the aircraft shortly after departure," an Alaska Airlines representative said in the statement to CNN.

"The plane returned to the airport and landed safely."

The flight took off from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport at 7:36 a.m. local time and returned to the airport at 8:04 a.m., Alaska Airlines told CNN Travel.

Part of the hood - a removable metal casing for the engine - came off the plane when it landed, according to the airline.

Passenger Greg Anderson was aboard Flight 558 on Monday and took photos showing damage to the plane's left engine.

Anderson said he could see pieces of the deck falling off.

"We slowed down and then the captain came over and said he felt an 'unusual vibration,' and they told us he was looking for a place to land," Anderson said.

He added that another part of the hood fell off as the plane was landing.

No injuries were reported among the 176 passengers and six crew members on board at the time, the Alaska Airlines statement said.

The guests were transferred to a new flight to San Diego, which departed about 2 1/2 hours after they returned to the gate, the airline said in an email.

Anderson said he was booked on another flight and arrived in San Diego around 1:30 p.m.

Cruise ship rescues Cuban migrants stranded at sea

By Patrick Oppmann, Sahar Akbarzai, and Paul P. Murphy,

Cuban migrants board the Carnival Paradise cruise ship on August 19, 2022.

Six Cuban migrants adrift at sea on a makeshift raft were rescued by a cruise ship last week, video shared with CNN shows.

Video captured the impromptu encounter last Friday as the Carnival company's cruise ship, Carnival Paradise, set sail from Tampa, Florida to Cozumel, Mexico.

The video shows passengers clapping and cheering as the migrants approached the ship.

"They didn't have oars," said passenger Cintia Zingoni, who shot the video.

"It wasn't really a boat. It was a piece of furniture, maybe a cabinet and they used it as a boat."

Zingoni, a real estate agent from Orlando, Florida, was on the boat with her family and friends when they witnessed the event.

His video shows what appears to be a small piece of cloth that the migrants were using as a sail and Styrofoam attached to the sides of their boat to float.

Zingoni said it also appeared that the migrants were using a pot lid to paddle.

The migrants were welcomed aboard the ship where they received a medical check-up, food and clothing, according to Carnival Cruise Lines spokesman Matt Lupoli.

When the ship arrived in Cozumel, they were turned over to Mexican officials, he said.

According to Zingoni, the ship's captain announced to passengers that the migrants were dehydrated but otherwise fine.

Cubans who arrive in the United States and apply for asylum are generally able to obtain permanent residence under a special status granted by the Cuban Adjustment Act of 1962. Cubans picked up at sea by the United States Coast Guard are usually returned to the island. .

Paul Pelosi, the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, pleaded guilty Tuesday to driving under the influence in May.

Judge Joseph Solga sentenced Pelosi to five days in jail but will receive credit for two days already served and two days for conduct credit.

His remaining day will be fulfilled through a court work program.

Paul Pelosi will be on probation for three years and will pay more than $1,700 in fines.

The court also ordered that an ignition interlock device be installed in his vehicle for one year, that restitution remain in the court's jurisdiction, and that he attend a drunk driving class for three months.

Amanda Bevins, Pelosi's attorney, appeared on her behalf.

Under California law, a defendant does not have to be present in the courtroom unless ordered to do so by a judicial officer and may appear through his or her attorney in a misdemeanor case.

Pelosi was arrested on May 28 after an overnight collision with another driver in Napa, California.

Earlier this month, he pleaded not guilty.

The 82-year-old had been attempting to cross SR-29 in late May when his 2021 Porsche was struck by a 2014 Jeep traveling north on the highway, according to a California Highway Patrol collision report.

The vehicles "sustained significant damage from the collision," according to a criminal complaint.

The complaint noted that Pelosi was operating her vehicle "under the influence of an alcoholic beverage and a drug and under the combined influence of both."

Authorities said in the complaint that when asked for identification at the scene, Pelosi handed officers both his license and an "11-99 Foundation" card.

The foundation is the California Highway Patrol charity, which "provides emergency assistance to California Highway Patrol employees and scholarships for their children," according to its website.

Originally from San Francisco, Paul has been married to Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat from California, since 1963. The couple has five children.

Biden Orders Airstrikes Against Iran-Backed Groups in Syria

By Michael Callahan, Oren Liebermann, and Devan Cole

US President Joe Biden ordered airstrikes on Iran-backed groups in Syria on Tuesday, just over a week after several rockets landed near a military base in northeastern Syria housing US troops.

Airstrikes carried out by the US military targeted Iranian-backed groups in Deir ez-Zor, Syria, the US Central Command said in a statement.

The attacks targeted "infrastructure facilities used by groups affiliated with Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps," Colonel Joe Buccino, a CENTCOM spokesman, said in the statement.

“Under the direction of President Biden, US military forces carried out precision airstrikes in Deir ez-Zor Syria today.

These precision strikes are meant to defend and protect US forces from attacks like the ones on August 15 against US personnel by Iranian-backed groups," Buccino said, referring to last week's attack on Green's base. Village near the Iraqi border.

That attack did not result in damage or injury.

Biden, according to the statement, "directed these attacks consistent with his Article II authority to protect and defend U.S. personnel by disrupting or deterring attacks by Iranian-backed groups."

Buccino told CNN that the United States targeted a group of bunkers used for ammunition storage and logistical support by Iranian-backed groups in Syria.

The US military extensively monitored a total of 13 bunkers at the same complex, Buccino said, totaling more than 400 hours of surveillance.

The attack targeted 11 of the bunkers, as the United States could not be sure whether the other two bunkers were clear of people, Buccino said.

But shortly before CENTCOM carried out the attack, the military pushed back two more bunkers due to a small group of people nearby.

In the end, Buccino said the military attacked nine bunkers at the compound in eastern Syria.

The aim of the attack was to destroy the bunkers, Buccino said, and based on an initial assessment, no one was killed as a result.

The United States maintains approximately 900 troops in Syria, largely divided between the At-Tanf base and the oil fields in the country's east.
