Almost 30 rescue workers were involved in an exercise by the Gilching volunteer fire brigade this week.

It was about an accident with acetone.

Gilching

– A traffic accident becomes a chemical hazard – that was the subject of an exercise that around 30 rescue workers from the Gilching volunteer fire department completed on Monday evening.

"Again it was a driver from the company Strahlemann & Sons who was involved in a serious accident," said firefighter Nicolas Reis yesterday of the dangerous situation.

"We were alerted to a traffic accident as part of our train exercise, but we were informed that an undefined liquid was leaking from one of the vehicles."

On site, in the building yard of the municipality of Gilching, the firefighters immediately cordoned off a danger area, which could only be entered by people with special equipment.

After the driver was quickly rescued using respiratory protection, it turned out that he had already come into contact with radioactive material before the accident and had to be decontaminated accordingly.

As a result of further investigation of the scene of the accident by comrades specially trained for this case, it was determined that the leaking liquid was the hazardous substance acetone, which is why all further work at the danger point could only be carried out by comrades in orange splash protection suits.

"After the leak was sealed and the comrades were decontaminated, we were able to end the exercise and discuss it."

Conclusion: “The exercise went well, some things could be better.

But that's what we're doing," said Reis.

An exercise of this kind is worth its weight in gold, especially for new comrades.

"Because it's halfway real." And it looked spectacular because bright yellow food coloring splattered around as an acetone substitute.

The situation was dealt with after almost an hour, and the rescue workers were on the road for two hours in total, including the meeting.
