The state of California is expected to approve today (Thursday) a ban on the sale of new cars that run on gasoline.
The ban will take effect in 2035.
The state's Air Resources Committee will vote today on the ban, which also aims to encourage the sale of electric cars until 2035. California's clean air standards have been adopted by other states, so it is possible that the ban will spread beyond its borders.

In 2020, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed an executive order aimed at reducing the sale of gasoline cars by 2035. Today's step is to begin implementing the order.
California's plan is more ambitious than the United States' federal goals.
President Joe Biden said last year that he hopes half of new car sales will be electric cars by 2030.
Automakers are increasing sales of electric cars, and some have even pledged to increase the percentage of electric cars in total sales.
However, some argue that companies will struggle to meet the plan's goal in California.
According to John Bocella, president of the Alliance for Motorized Innovation, the regulation is "extremely challenging."
"Meeting these targets depends on external factors such as inflation, supply chains, electricity generation infrastructure, labor force, availability of essential minerals and the shortage of chips," he said.
"These factors are complex and interconnected worldwide, and are beyond the control of the auto industry or the California Air Resources Board."
