The death of a one-year-old toddler was determined this morning (Thursday) at the Ziv Hospital in Safed, after he drowned in a pool in the city yesterday.
He was evacuated in critical and unstable condition and this morning the medical team had to pronounce him dead, after a fight for his life.
The toddler's name is Yonatan Deutsch, over a year old, the son of Rabbi Yehoshua Deutsch, a member of the Kiryat Yaarim council.
A few weeks ago, a girl was born to the family, and this week they went on vacation in Safed.
According to data from an organization before children's safety, so far in 2022 12 children have drowned, half of them in and around the home.
The data also shows that in the last five years, 2017-2021, 99 children drowned, half of them toddlers.
Orly Silvinger, CEO of the organization Betram for child safety: "In these days of the big holiday and the period between seasons, we see an increase in the number of drownings.
When it comes to babies and young children, most drowning cases occur in the home environment.
Children are attracted to the water and due to their body structure, they may drown even in shallow water a few centimeters deep."
"Drowning happens quickly and silently. A drowning child cannot cry, call for help or rescue himself independently. We call on parents, don't count on miracles - in a water environment children are not left unattended, not even for a moment," Silvinger continued.
"They appoint an adult on duty who supervises the children in the water at any given moment, within touching distance and without distractions. When spending time at the B&B, they make sure that the pool is fenced with a gate that locks automatically to prevent children from entering without supervision."
Over the weekend, a young man in his 20s drowned in a public swimming pool in the northern Jezreel Valley.
Medical teams were called to the scene after she was pulled from the water unconscious.
He was taken to the Emek Hospital in Afula in a critical condition during resuscitation operations, but finally the doctors had to pronounce him dead.
