A week ago, part of the north pier on the Weser in Bremerhaven collapsed.

The lighthouse - a landmark of Seestadt - is in danger of collapsing.

Now the dome has to be removed.

Bremerhaven - The rescue operation for the mole tower in Bremerhaven, which has gotten into trouble, is proving to be more difficult than expected.

The historic red dome could not be lifted off with a heavy-duty crane on Thursday either.

As Bremenports announced in the evening, the dome that had been cut out had not moved in several attempts.

It may be heavier than the calculated five tons.

But it could also get stuck in one place.

The dome was originally supposed to be raised on Wednesday.

The north mole with the beacon on the Weser is one of the landmarks of Bremerhaven.

A week ago, the pier at the Geeste estuary sagged, and the lighthouse has been dangerously lopsided ever since.

According to the city, the navigation mark, which was put into operation in 1914, has been a listed building since 2001.

The north mole is owned by the State of Bremen, the tower with its active beacon belongs to the Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration.

Work to save the monument should continue on Friday.

Due to the lifting attempts, the red dome now has a dent.

But according to Bremenports, that is the least of the problems.

It would have to be renovated anyway after the rescue.

In Bremen there is a discussion as to why it could come to this and why the landmark was not secured early.

Bremerhaven's Lord Mayor Melf Grantz (SPD) had sharply criticized his initial reaction.

"If you wanted to be cynical, you could say it was a disaster with an announcement," said the mayor last week.

"For years I have urgently pointed out to those responsible in the Senate and at Bremenports the need to renovate the north mole, but unfortunately nothing visible has happened." dpa
