On December 7, 1972, a Saturn 5 rocket took off from Cape Canaveral to take the last American astronauts to the Moon, during the Apollo 17 mission. In the midst of the Cold War, America had perfectly demonstrated its technological superiority against the Soviets, and the NASA no longer had any reason to pursue a program then considered too expensive.
Almost fifty years later, it is a new giant rocket, SLS, a 2600 ton monster and 100 meters high, which is installed on the launch pad of the legendary Kennedy Space Center, in Florida.
With, once again, the Moon in sight.
The first two flights will be automatic, but the third, scheduled for 2025, will carry astronauts.
