Lower Saxony's Prime Minister Stephan Weil insists on a third relief package.

While the traffic light is arguing, he trusts the chancellor to come to an agreement soon.

Berlin/Hannover – Acting instead of talking: In view of the massive price hikes in Germany, the call for a new relief package is getting louder.

Lower Saxony's Prime Minister Stephan Weil (SPD) called on the traffic light coalition to reach an agreement quickly and insisted on additional help for low earners and pensioners during the gas crisis.

"I'm counting on people pulling themselves together," said SPD politician

The situation is "serious".

Instead of arguing for a long time, the state must now give people orientation.

However, the head of government rejected criticism of Chancellor Olaf Scholz's (SPD) weakness in leadership.

Gas crisis in Germany: Lower Saxony's Prime Minister Stephan Weil (SPD) insists on a third relief package

For weeks there has been a dispute in the traffic light coalition about how to deal with the current gas crisis.

After Russia reduced delivery volumes in the dispute over Western EU sanctions in the wake of the Ukraine war, energy costs rose to record highs.

In the traffic light coalition, the realization gradually prevailed that there must be a third relief package - although two billion programs had already been launched this year.

However, there is disagreement between the three governing parties about the exact content.

While the FDP around Finance Minister Christian Lindner is concentrating primarily on a tax relief law and thus wants to relieve all sections of the population once again, the SPD and the Greens are pushing for more targeted aid for low-income households.

They accuse the liberals of using their concept to relieve the top earners in the crisis without needing to.

New relief package: Stephan Weil wants help for pensioners and low earners

Weil also wants to focus on low earners in the new edition of the relief package.

"At the moment we have to take care of those who have really serious concerns," he said in an interview.

The problem is that the previous relief packages of a little more than 30 billion euros would have an effect, but only below average, especially for a number of low-income earners.

"This mistake must be corrected," demanded the Prime Minister of Lower Saxony.

He suggested granting more support to recipients of housing benefit, to students, but also to pensioners.

In the interview, Weil explicitly spoke out in favor of a flat-rate energy price for retirees.

Abolish cold progression: Lindner plan has a justification for Weil in the new relief package

At the same time, he warned against condemning the FDP's proposal in principle.

The abolition of cold progression, as sought by Lindner, has different facets.

"When it comes to relieving high earners, I have to contradict him: No, I don't think that's right," said Weil.

But one must also see that a large part of the Lindner plan would be aimed at people with middle incomes.

"On this point I can go along well," added the head of government.

The Prime Minister is in line with Chancellor Scholz.

In his summer press conference, he promised a compromise.

There would be many proposals on the table.

They will be checked, added up and finally put together into a package, Scholz said and added: "It works." He promised an agreement by October.

In the dispute over a new relief package, Weil is now defending Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD).

Nevertheless, criticism was raised.

Political observers then described Scholz as weak in leadership because he allowed the debate within the coalition to continue without comment, it said.

Weil rejected the doubts about the Chancellor's leadership.

Coalitions are always characterized by the fact that different partners want to set different priorities.

A compromise is of course more difficult in a three-way constellation than in a two-way alliance.

"Since I've been leading coalitions myself for a number of years, I know that you don't lead a coalition with power words, but with good, reasonable agreements," said the Lower Saxony, who has to stand for re-election in October.

This is also the line of Olaf Scholz, who would face great challenges.

"I can't think of a similar situation in the past few decades where so many people had legitimate concerns about getting by," Weil said.

That is why the state must now give quick answers.

But he is certain that the traffic lights will find the right compromise in good time.
