Internal crisis at Amnesty: The Israeli branch opposes the delegitimization campaign led by the organization Israel today

2022-08-27T15:45:05.873Z

The main point of contention concerns Amnesty International's insistence on an ongoing campaign that presents the entire state of Israel as an apartheid state - including within the 1948 borders • According to many observers, this campaign effectively denies Israel's right to exist as a Jewish state

Against the background of the strong anti-Israel line that Amnesty International has adopted in recent years, a real crisis has arisen between the Israeli branch of the organization and the world headquarters in London.

Sources in the community of human rights organizations in Israel say that some of the leaders of Amnesty in Israel and many activists are frustrated by the organization's focus on the campaign to delegitimize Israel, by the intense collaborations with BDS organizations and by the promotion of the narrative that presents Israel as an apartheid state.

The main point of contention concerns Amnesty International's insistence on a continuous campaign that presents the entire state of Israel as an apartheid state - including within the 1948 borders. According to many observers, this campaign effectively denies Israel's right to exist as a Jewish state.

On the other hand, the heads of the organization's branch in Israel want to focus on human rights violations in the territories of Judea and Samaria, and oppose Amnesty International's expansive definition of apartheid.

Amnesty International's anti-Israel line is led by the organization's Secretary General Agnes Clammerd. Recently, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs prepared a comprehensive report that monitored Amnesty's activities, from which a difficult picture emerged regarding the organization's attitude to Israel.

"Amnesty turns out to be one of the most hostile organizations to Israel in the world, a real enemy," said after the report was published Deputy Director of the Public Diplomacy Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Emmanuel Nachshon, who also serves as the ministry's spokesman.

"Under a humanitarian guise, this organization conducts itself with selective hypocrisy and in recent years has become the spearhead of Israel's enemies, along with Iran, Hezbollah and other haters of Israel. We will continue to work tirelessly to strengthen Israel in the world and prevent any influence from those who want to destroy us."

Recently, Amnesty has been facing a serious crisis due to a report by the organization that claimed that "the fighting tactics of the Ukrainian army endanger civilians". The report was immediately used by Russia for propaganda against Ukraine, and led to the resignation of several senior Amnesty officials and the mass abandonment of donors to the organization.

Amnesty Israel stated in response to allegations of tensions with the organization's global headquarters: "It is not new that there are different interpretations of the issue, and we are open and transparent about the diversity of positions within the Israeli branch. This is quite natural in a global movement, and this is not the first nor the last time that a movement that deals with a variety of issues There will be absolute unanimity."
