In the coming years, the summers will probably be even hotter and drier than the current one.

The municipal utilities are prepared for this problem.

Geretsried -

It is an extremely dry summer.

In some places, cities have already asked their citizens to save water.

The households in Geretsried and Königsdorf are supplied from the water protection area in the district of Wiesen.

Since 2017, the water has been treated in an ultrafiltration system.

Is there enough water in times like these?

And is it clean?

Bernhard Bayer, commercial director of the public utility company, answered the questions from editor Susanne Weiß.

Mr Bayer, given the drought this year, is there still enough groundwater in Königsdorf-Wiesen?

Bernhard Bayer:

The groundwater level is currently low, but in mid-August no statement can be made for the rest of the year.

In our area, we are very dependent on short-term precipitation events, and we have significant fluctuations in groundwater levels.

What is certain, however, is that there will still be significant precipitation up to the end of the year.

Otherwise, bottlenecks are quite likely here.

Does the cleanliness of the drinking water suffer when little or no fresh rainwater flows into the ground?

Bernhard Bayer:

A connection is conceivable under certain hydrogeological conditions, but we have never been able to establish such a connection.

Even in the past, longer dry phases had no effect on cleanliness.

In any case, even in the raw water – even before the filtration – no limit value violations were found for a very long time.

Looking to the future: Are you worried about the water supply for Geretsried and Königsdorf?

Bernhard Bayer:

It can be assumed that the average groundwater level will at best stagnate in the next few years.

In view of a further increase in demand due to growing population numbers, this is of course a future problem area, but one that has already been addressed.
